HILLSBOROUGH INGLESIDE
. HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. Gaily bedecked with red, white and blue streamers the Hillsborough Hall last night resounded with the skirl of the pipes and the laughter of a large number of residents of the district and visitors from a wide area who danced to the strains of Highland melodies at the New Plymouth Caledonian Society’s ingleside. The feeling of hospitality associated with these gatherings was apparent and all enjoyed the night. Dancing on a sprung floor is in itself a pleasure, but the hall committee had the surface like glass, splendid for round dances but tricky for reels and the like. Chief Brown was unable to be present early and Chieftain A. Rankin was played in by Pipers MacDonald and Goble. He reminded those present of the occasion when the last ingleside was held in the hall and Sir Harry Lauder favoured them with a visit. His impromptu call had done much to strengthen the interest in Scottish functions in the district.
The haggis was played around the hall by Pipers Black and Goble, borne bravely aloft by Chieftain Rankin, while Chief Dr. Brown' vigorously pronounced Burns’ Ode. The secret of the success of the inglesides lies largely in the wide variety offered in the programmes. For highland dances Pipers MacDonald, Goble, Black, McKinnon, Reid and Drummer Cumming all assisted, while none could resist <the inviting modern and old-time dance numbers played by Martin’s orchestra. Supper was provided, the ladies’ committee including Mesdames H. C. Sampson (convenor), H. O. Skelton, T. Simpson, Parker (2), Marsh (2), Hall, Briggs, Proud and Miss Sampson. During the supper interval an extra waltz was played by Miss Mona Martin. Messrs. J. Corkill (secretary) and W. S. Jones as masters of ceremonies kept the dance merrily moving.
