BIRD ROAD SETTLERS LEAVE

FAREWELL AND PRESENTATION. RECORD CROWD ATTENDS SOCIAL. A farewell social was held in the Bird Road school on Monday night, in honour of Messrs. D. Morris, W. Stewart and A. Stewart and families, who are leaving the district. Besides the residents of Bird Road and a number of visitors, there was a large contingent from Pukengahu, to which district the Stewart family really belongs. Never before has such a large crowd demanded admittance to the school; Dances were interspersed with items. The presentation was made by the chairman of the school committee, Mr. J. Parish, after supper had been served by the ladies. “Uur guests to-night have been excellent residents in the district and have been ever ready to give help,” said Mr. Parish. During his residence on the road Mr. Morris had taken a prominent part in all social activities. Besides a long term of service on the school committee Mr. Morris had always been a member of special committees. “Mrs. Morris, too, has worked right royally with the best of them/ ’said Mr. Parish. Equally sterling service in - the community interests of the district had been given by the Messrs. Stewart at the farther end of the road. The large crowd present was testimony to their popularity. Mr. W. E. Hills endorsed Mr. Parish’s remarks. He referred to Mr. Morris’ capabilities as an organiser, and to Mr. Stewart’s keen interest in all activities of the district. Mr. Parish presented Mr. Morris and family' with a chiming clock, Mr. W. Stewart with a rug, and a Mr. A. Stewart with a leather suit case, Music for the dances was supplied by Messrs. H. Waite (piano), A. .Coleman (saxophone), P. Femmel (cornet) and W. Waite (violin). Extras were played by'Mrs. W. Parrish, Misses M. Vickers and R. Old, and' Messrs. H. Waite and K. N. Neal.' Items were rendered by Miss M. Vickers (song) and Messrs. P. J. Aitken (song) and V. J. Henderson (recitation). Mr. K. N. Neal played an accompaniment. Messrs. D. Bilski and A, R. Mcßae' were masters of ceremonies.
