HAWERA HIGH SCHOOL
MONTHLY BOARD MEETING. The Hawera Technical High School Board held its monthly meeting last evening, Mr. A. Lees presiding. Also present were Mrs. J. W. Harding, Messrs. C. Bowman, A. Brown, J. Gray, J. W. J. Harding, T. C. Hobbs, L. A. Jennings, J., B. Murdoch and Dr. W. M. Thomson.
The principal, Mr. A. Gray, eubmitted the following report: “The total roll number ia 266, made up as follows: Literary 106, commercial 110, home science 22. agriculture 6, engineering 22. The woodworking class has been advertised and so far five have notified their intention to attend. The motor' mechanics’ class and the plumbing class are also continuing with 12 and 8- pupils respectively. ' A donation of £5 has been received from the Incorporated Institute of Accountants of New Zealand for the purchase of books for the commercial division, The new boiler is now in position, and the classes in the new building are appreciating the renewal of the heating system. The Department of Education advisee that owing to the financial stringency no subsidies would be granted except for urgent needs. The application of the hoard for a subsidy on a donation for pictures- was accordingly refused.
It was decided to grant £2O to the sports funds.’ It was also agreed to purchase four new typewriters and a number of new books for the school library, WATERLOO CUP POSTPONED. ' COURSING COMMENCES TO-DAY. ' Heavy rain,, combined with a bitterly ; cold southerly wind, made conditions so • unpleasant at Whenuakura, the plump- ; ton course of the Patea-Hawera Coursing Club, that the three-day Waterloo Cup meeting which was to have com- ■ mejiced yesterday was. postponed until to-day. Unusual interest is attached . to the meeting, which, is the biggest I event in coursing in New Zealand. The - Waterloo Cup,. Which: is to be run today, has a stake valued at. £l7B, while the stakes of the. Waterloo Purse and ! Waterloo Plate,, to .be run on Thursday : and Friday, are each of £37.
