. The Qtakeho ladies’ hockey team to. • play Gpunake at Opunake to-day will be;. N. Julian, N. Gopperth, G. Bennett, iM. Jenkins, I. Campbell, A. Hughes, M. Symes, N. Bennett, M. Davies', K. Julian, L. Putt. HAWERA’S- WATER SUPPLY. 'EXTRAORDINARY iSERVICE WANTED On behalf of Mrs. R. L. Pease Messrs. Duflill and Gib.sop, recently waited, oa ’the-, general committee of the Hawera Borough. Council to, ask that an. extraordinary water supply be allowed to a new dwelling; now- being erected on Mrs. Pease’s, property. It was stated that some years ago- Mrs, pease -had spent a sum of money- in- having- a water main connected to her property, and now that 'she was building another house on the same property she. desired to connect it, with that main.

The borough, engineer, Mr. John Sturrock, was asked' to, provide a report. He ; stated that, ia the earlier years of hie experience at Hawera the water pressure. was. fairly go.ocL Even, in summer droughts there was. usually about 251bs; minimum to bo? had. During the boom house, building proceeded apace and later many new mains were laid and considerable numbers of new connections made. The effect of this was that the day pres--suree during droughts-, fell to such, an extent that the council: considered it was necessary to safeguard the interests of ratepayers by stopping further extraordinary- supplies-for a time. Some :outside service was given- by means of the, night, valve system -but that also had to. be stopped. Assuming that there were about 20'applicants who would take, night services the question was what effect that supply would have upon the pressure. If the new booster was as successful as he believed it would be, the general situation w.ould bo better, but just how much better no one could :tell. As a result of the better pressure -people would probably use more water, -and the leakages inseparable from any old water system would let more water escape. Tho question was whether the council desired to conserve for ratepayers all the 'benefit derivable from the booster or whether it was willing to let outsiders share the benefit.

In view of the exception circumstances Or. A. K. North moved that the application bo granted.. : Several councillors opposed the motion on the grounds: that the application would ho creating a precedent. The motion was defeated, and on a 'division being called for it was recorded that. Crs. North, Bayley and Townsend voted for, and the 'Mayor (Mr. E. ■A. Pacey)' and Crs. Simpson, Reid and Morrissey against. ■. tV A,. IC.. Dyson, who stated' that he would .probably have a. similar, appliest&'i&lk'e'dn. the future, did not vote.
