MAT AU NEWS. The third of the series of euchre parties in aid of the hall funds was. held on Friday. It was very well attended. The prizes, which were donated by Mr. and Mrs. A. Smith,, were won by Mr. and Mrs. P. Rolfe first men’s and ladies’ respectively. The ladies provided supper, which was followed by an enjoyable dance, music for which was supplied by Messrs. W. Bertrand (Purangi), A. Smellie and W. Rawlinson. The “unemployed" are very busy on the Mangapa Road, which leads from Purangi to Kiore. Some single men are being employed and the work is to be extended to the Matau saddle. Corners are to be taken off. In a football match at Purangi in the week-end, Purangi beat Tarata by 1) to nil.

The leading man. is Robert Aines, who has been extremely popular on Broadway. A full supporting programme includes a “Mickey the Mouse” cartoon.

For many years the matinee idoi of the English stage, Carl Brisson, who iri remembered for his fine performances in “The Ring” and “The Manxman/’ will ■ be seen and heard at the King’s Theatre in the screen version of Eden Philpotts’ famous novel, “The American Prisoner,” which i<? being released by Cinema Art Filins His perfect English in this picture is a treat to hear, and ranked him overnight the idol of the screen a<s well as that of the legitimate stage. In this picture he ifi east as a young American officer, a prisoner of war, who moots and falls in love with a beautiful English girl, who helped him to escape. While sitting in the oldworld drawing room of tlio girl’s homo he singe to her “Remember,” a beautiful melody, which is also the theme song of the film. So well is it snug by him, that in England during the first week of the picture’s release, thoiisanchs of copies were sold throughout the country. Supporting Brisson in the picture ,is Madeleine Carroll, Cecil Barry, Brom]ey Davenport and : several other famous British artistes.
