• A radical change is probable in the type of play that will be produced in future by students of the Auckland University College, according to a recommendation adopted at a meeting of the Students’ Association executive. The “wiring” of public theatres for the screening of talking films has rendered the production of “flesh and blood” musical comedies impractical, and the students are now considering the prospect of presenting a non-musical play with topical reference, produced on a fess elaborate scale generally. The net profits from the recent extravaganza were reported to have reached a total of £316, Receipts having increased. by several hundred pounds per week as compared with the corresponding period last year, one big drapery firm is beginning to doubt the existence of a slump, says the Christchurch Press. Not only .is trade considerably improved, but . its book debts are coming in approximately 10 i per cent, better than in 1929, and the company is employing more hands than ever before. “I don’t know how long it is o-oing to last,” remarked the manager, to a reporter, “but we arc hoping for the best.” The country, he said* was only making a half-hearted attempt to adjust its trade balance, Imports must be reduced by a third, but so far no such drastic cut was apparent. At the sitting of the Wellington Anglican Synod last week Canon W. G. Williams spoke on the striking signs of the spread of Christianity among th© Maoris since the appointment of the Rev. F. A. Bennett as Maori Bishop. Maoris who had held aloof from Christianity since the days of the Maori wars, he said, were now eager, to accept what the Maori missionaries had to bring, and there were on all sides encouraging signs that the Church was making progress among tlie Natives.
