The second of the ladies’ guild evenings was held at Mrs, Looney’s residence last week. There was a good attendance and the evening was spent in dancing and competitions. The paper wrapping game was won by Miss Renowdcn and Mr. S. Savage, and the advertisement competition by Mr. Gardner and Mrs. Swadel. The. Monte Carlo waltzes were won by Mr. and Mrs. H. Townsend and Mrs. Townsend and partner. Music for dancing was provided by Mr. Murray. The Ohangai school teams visited Mero Mere school on Friday. There was a large gathering of people from both districts, it being the final game in basketball for the season and tflie deciding game for the cup. A very good game was played by the girls, the result being a win for Ohangai team by four points to one. The boys put up a good fight in football, the result being five points to nil in favour of Ohangai. TALKIES AT PATEA TOWN HALL. Adapted from Vina Dalmar’s story, “Dance Hall” is a realistic and believable tale of a youth’s love for a little dance hall hostess and the complications which serve nearly to wreck the romance. “Dance Hall,” which will be shown at the Patea town hall to-night, boasts one of the most competent allround casts ever assembled. Olive Borden, more bewitching than ever, and Arthur Lake are ideally suited in the leading roles. Particularly effective is the dancing of the two. They dance the Dumb Drag and Blue Bottom, two of the season’s hits. “Mickey’s Champs.” is another Mickey Doblan comedy with an all-star cast of 20 children. To-morrow “The Trespasser” season commences, PERSONALS. Messrs. S. 0- Tonks and A. Good have left Hawera to attend the annual Racing Conference at Wellington, and Mr. B.° McCarthy, Hawera, has left to attend the Trotting Conference, also being held, at Wellington this week. The sudden death occurred yesterday morning of Mr. Alec. Moore Hannah, secretary of the Kaupokonui Co-opera-tive Dairy Company. Mr. Hannah, who was well and popularly known in tennis and golf circles, was under medical treatment and had been attended by the doctor on Sunday. His wife predeceased him about 12 months ago. There is no family. The death occurred at Wellington yesterday morning of Mr. W. Cook, who was for some years on the staffs of the Hawera Star and of Mr. C. O. Ekdahl, Hawera. He was also a leading cornet player in the Hawera Municipal Band. Mr. Cook was aged about 45 years and leaves a widow aud family of three. GENERAL ITEMS. Advice was received at Hawera yesterday that a South Taranaki dairy factory has obtained 14d per lb. f.o.b. for a shipment to London of 600 boxes of creamery butter. The fiftieth jubilee of the Hawera Masonic Lodge will be celebrated this evening and a large attendance is expected. It°is understood that the Grand Master, Mr. J. J. Clark, C.8.E., Dunedin, will be present. Arrangements for the celebration of the switching on of electric power in the Waimate°West county will be made at a public meeting to be held at the Auroa hall to-night. The -celebrations will take the form of a social and dance.

Hawera Ramblero’ hockey team to play Otakeho ladies at Hawera to-mor-row will be Mieses N. Shannon, E. McBeth, N. Davis, A. Johnston, V. Healey, G. Young, E. Dahl. M. and F. Woolliams, K. Goodwin and F. Taylor. R. P. Morrissey and Co. advertise details of the sale to be held in their salerooms, Union Street, Hawera, today. The Park (Hawera) Tennis Club will hold a dance in St. Joseph’s Hall, Hawera, to-morrow. Very complete arrangements have been made.
