Yorkshire opened disastrously in its first innings .against Australia, fiv® wickets having fallen for 58 runs at the luncheon adjournment. Grimmett, who took a?, the wickets in the previous match, and a'Bcckett completely routed, the leading county. Leyland, the test aspirant, W. Barker and the veteran. Rhodes were the only batsmen who faced Grimmett confidently. The struggling innings ended at 3.40. Australia’s fielding was very bad, about half-a-dozen chances being missed; otherwise Yorkshire’s score would have, been even less. The county followed on, being 156 runs behind. The score in the first innings was their worst this season. They again started badly, Hurwood shattering Mitchell's stumps. Rain stopped play for half-an-hour. Hurwood upon the resumption claimed two more victims. He was showing splendid form and causing all the batsmtn trouble. Grimmett came on at 56 and immediately baffled the batsmen. W. Barber and Robinson fell victims to his wiles. The South Australian secured his hundredth wicket of the tour when Bradman took a great catch at tho boundary to dismiss Dennis. Hurwood dismissed Wood before stumps were drawn, leaving Yorkshire in a sorry plight.
