SLUMP IN TIMBER TRADE
CURTAILMENT OF PRODUCTION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Hamilton, June 19. The dumping of foreign timber on the New Zealand market is not without serious effects on the industry in the Dominion. At a meeting of 40 sawmillers at Hamilton yesterday it was thought necessary to consider a further curtailment of output, either by shortening hands or by a further reduction in working hours per week. It was shown that the mills were now working at 50 per eent. of their capacity, and a large number had closed down.
The following resolution was passed: That owing to the extraordinary fall-ino,-off in the demand for timber, which amounted approximately to 2,000,000 feet per month, equal to one-third of the demand over the past six months, the conference has decided to recommend its members to further curtail output, either by shortening hands, or by further reducing working hours per week.
