THE GOVERNOR-GENERAL.

The welcome that will be accorded the Governor-General and Lady Bledisloc tfn their arrival at New Plymouth to-night will be as warm and sincere as any ever offered to a representative of the Crown. Taranaki feels it an honour to receive such, distinguished visitors, and appreciates the kindness they show in coming to the .province within three months of their arrival in the Dominion, for the duties of the new Governor-General have necessarily been heavy at the outset of his official career. Since he comes as the King’s representative, his Excellency is a guest whom this province delights to honour. Taranaki has a long and creditable record of service in the interests of the nation, and the Empire and is glad of the opportunity to convey to His Majesty’s envoy an expression of its abiding loyalty. But it may be hoped that their Excellencies will be able to accept the welcome not only as their official due, but also as a personal greeting from those who desire the privilege of regarding them as friends. Time was when the visit-of a governor was a mighty spectacle because its purpose was to impress upon the people the power and majesty of their overlord, 10-day the tie that binds the people to the Throne is far more human, though not on that account the less substantial, and the relationship between the representative of the Throne and the people attains a very happy degree of intimacy. New Zealand, of course, has been extremely fortunate in its Governors-Gen-eral, and Lord and Lady Bledisloe have quickly proved themselves to be worthy successors of those whom the Dominion holds in respectful and affectionate remembrance. Because of their love of the Empire and their desire to serve it, they have willingly made the very considerable sacrifices demanded of those who come to represent the King in one of the farthest of the Dominions, and they have shown their readiness to enter wholeheartedly into the life'of this country- By reason of his great knowledge of farming, Lord Blcdisioe is especially well qualified to be the friend and counsellor of the people of New Zealand, as his public utterances have shown, and his good wife has evinced a keen interest in the progressive social movements which flourish in the Dominion. Their visit to Taranaki will afford them opportunity to gather knowledge of what it is to be hoped they will find a particularly interesting province and of citizens who will welcome them with very real pleasure.
