“SURPRISED AND ANNOYED”

MAYOR ARCHER ENTERS PROTEST. BEER AND STOUT FOR SUPPER. By Telegraph. —Press Association. Christchurch, June 10. “I’m very surprised and annoyed to hear that at the supper provided at the Council Chambers last night and to which I was invited, professedly with the idea of healing the breach, that beer and stout formed part of the menu,” said the Mayor, the Rev. J. K. Archer to-day. “This,” he added, “is a reversion to the bad old custom which, I understand, prevailed among city councillors many years ago and which, on some occasions, was so abused as to lead to ’boozerooing’ for the greater part of the night.” The breach referred to occurred at a recent meeting when, following a disagreement on the 40-hour week question, the Mayor decided to discontinue his practice of entertaining councillors at supper. Last night’s supper was supplied by a few citizens and councillors.
