AGITATORS BREED CRIME

DEATH OF POLICE OFFICER SIMPLE PEASANTS DECEIVED !t ATROCIOUS FALSEHOODS ’ ’ By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 7 p.m. Helhi, June 10. Revolutionary .activities of National Congress workers among the simple villagers of western Bengal were responsible for an agitation leading to the ■prurdcr of the police officer ' when his party was attacked near Dastur in the week-end. It was earlier reported that jtwa inspectors were believed burned to. death and four constables were injured. The agitators', who had been imported from Calcutta, spread atrocious falsehoods among the peasants, asserting that the Government had been overthrown by the congress and that the payment of taxes had been abolished. They were excellently organised, having a secret postal service with couriers travelling between the villages and the big centres of population in Bengal. The agitators incited villagers to kill the police inspector. The other missing officers are believed to be captive in the jungle and their fate is uncertain. Armed police from Calcutta raided the agitators’ camp at Bandar near Midnapore and arrested thirty. A detachment of Eastern Frantier Rifles is •patrolling the area. Two were killed and six injured as a result of police firing to disperse crowds at Thottopalayam, near Vellore, Madras, when Hindus and Moslems clashed during the Moslem festival of Muharram.
