POSSIBLE DUTY ON COAL
IMPORTS FROM AUSTRALIA. By Telegraph.—Press Association. ■ Wellington, June 10. From inquiries made recently it would appear that the alarm expressed by the West Coast miners in regard to possible importations of cheap Australian coal into New Zealand is premature, although it is possible that future developments may give rise to some concern. The view is expressed in certain directions that it may then be necessary for the Government to consider the imposition of a duty on Australian coal, in order to protect the industry in New Zealand. It was learned from an authoritative source that the Government has not so far considered the question of a duty, but it is watching the position very carefully. Six colliers are now loading at Newcastle for New Zealand ports, and it is this fact that has probably given rise to the alarm on the West Coast, but it has been ascertained that very litle of thtse shipments will be for household consumption. Gas companies use New Zealand coal as much as possible, but it is necessary for them to import some.
