The Vatican is accelerating negotiations with the British Government with a view to a settlement of the Malta difference but wishes to obtain a declaration pledging the deferential attitude of -. the Maltese authorities to the church with full religious liberty, m return for -which the Catholics will be free to decide their political attitudes. Such accord, however, is dependent from the Vatican viewpoint upon the resignation of Lord-Strickland.
