TRAGIC MOTOR COLLISION

MAN KILLED NEAR HAMILTON

YOUNG WOMAN GRAVELY INJURED.

DRIVER DAZZLED BY HEADLIGHTS.

Hamilton, May 9.

Two were injured, one fatally, in *a head-on collision between two cars on the Hamilton-Morrinsville road near Newstead, four miles from Hamilton, about 10 o’clock last night. Thomas B. Shaw, aged 23, son of Mr. David Shaw, farmer, of Tauwhare, was killed.

Winifred Randle, aged 19, daughter of Mr. P. Randle, assistant-manager of the Matangi Glaxo factory, is suffering from a fractured skull and head injuries, and her condition is serious.

Their ear was driven by H. Shaw, Tan--whare, a cousin of Shaw, and was occupied by T. Brown, Miss Randle and Shaw. Going in the direction of Hamilton, it collided head-on with a car driven by L. H. Monteith, farmer, of Eureka, who was accompanied by his brother, A. F. Monteith. Both were members of the Marist senior Rugby football team, and were returning from football tice.

Miss Randle and T. Shaw suffered shocking head injuries, from which the latter succumbed at 3.30 o’clock this mdrning. Miss Randle sustained a severe fracture of the base of the skull and extensive head injuries. Both ears were extensively damaged. Shaw and Miss Randle were in the back seat. In view of the tangled wreckage the other occupants of the cars had miraculous escapes. Apart from minor bruises, scratches and shock none, of the others was hurt. The night was foggy, • and. Mr. Shaw is said to have been dazzled by the headlights of the approaching car. ;
