ONEHUNGA CARGO SERVICE
HAUTURU’S INITIAL VISIT. With the arrival at New Plymouth yesterday of the Northern Steamship Company’s Hauturu in the now One-hunga-New Plymouth cargo service came into being in place of the passenger and cargo service of the Rarawa and the Ngapuhi. The vesesl, under the command of Captain Jackson Fowler, arrived at 8.15. a.m. -with 130 tons of cargo for discharge and lifted 40 tons of Onehunga cargo from Wanganui, which the Arapawa brought coastwise. A completely new vessel, the Hauturu was built in 1927 by Messrs. G. Brown and Company, Ltd., Greenock. The vessel, ' 264 tons ■ gross and 162 tons net,
has a length of slightly over 133 feet a width of 27 feet 5 inches, and a depth of 8 feet 7 inches. The engines burn oil. Since arrival in New Zealand the Hauturu has been employed on various of the Northern Company’s cargo services. The vessel carries a crew of 11. Both the first officer, Mr. Rutledge, and the captain, have visited New Plymouth in their company's service, previously, each having been an an the Rarawa. The Hauturu will be able to take certain classes of caargo, which the Ngapuhi and Rarawa, being passenger vessels, were unable to carry. The Hauturu is next due at New Plymouth to-mor-row morning from Onehunga, and will return to the northern port the same day. Subsequently the vessel will leave Onehunga for New Plymouth on Saturdays and,. Wednesdays.
