DEATH OF A PIONEER

PASSING OF MRS. ANNE O’DONNELL One of the last of the pioneer ecttlei'B of South'Taranaki, Mrs. Anne O’Donnell, passed away at her residence, Cameron Street, Hawera, yesterday/ at the age of 68 -years. Born at County Fermanagh, Ireland, Airs. O’Donnell came' to New Zealand in her girlhood - and was one of the earliest- settlers of the Waimate. Plains, having resided in Taranaki for almost 50 years. About six years ago she retired to her town residence in Hawera, leaving her well-known Inalia property in charge of hei sons. Widely known for her kindness and generosity, she wag highly esteemed by all with whom she came in contact. Her husband, the late Alexander O’Donnell, predeceased her 21 years ago. She was a sister of ■ Messrs. Hugh and James Kearns, well-known early Otakeho settlers. . For the past three years Mrs. O’Donnell has been in delicate health, and hcr end was not unexpected.. She is survived by two sons, James and Thomas (Hawera), "and three daughters, Mrs. E. J. M. Ferguson (New Plymouth), Mrs. D. L. Tonks (Hawera), and Miss M. O’Donnell (Hawera); The funeral takes place at Manaia to-morrow, a requiem mass being held at St. Joseph’s Church, Hawera, at - 7.30 a.m. DEATH OF MRS. BL E. QUIN. THIRTY YEARS IN HAWERA. The death occurred at her residence, Main South Road, Hawera, on Saturday evening of Mrs. H. E. Quin, wife of Mr. Joseph Quin. ■ Mrs. Quin, who had been ailing for some time, was born at Hobart, Tasmania, and arrived at Hawera- over 30 years ago. She was the eldest daughter of the late Captain John Macdonald, of Bln#, a well-known captain in Dominion maritime, circles, and one time harbourmaster of Bluff. . ' The late Mrs. Quin is survived by her husband and a family of five, one daughter, Eileen, and four sons, Maurice, Eric, Roy and Stuart. Mrs. G. H. Washer and -Miss Macdonald are two of her sisters. -The funeral took' place from St. Mary’s Church, Hawera, yesterday afternoon. BOXING AT HAWERA. POSTPONEMENT OF = CONTEST, Through ah injury sustained while training for, his contest with Tommy Donovan at Hawera On May 16, Billy Grime has been forced to seek a postponement. The ex-triple champion •of Aiistralian was indulging in a workout on the Fairfield golf course at Hawera and slipped on a steep slope, injuring his ankle so severely that he had to be assisted back to his quarters. An examination yesterday disclosed that the ankle was swelling -and bruising from the instep to the calf of his left leg, while he also complained of pains in°’his leg muscle. At an emergency meeting yesterday the match committee of the Hawera Boxing Association decided to postpone the contest indefinitely. GOLF AT HAWERA. i PLAY ON SATURDAY.
