The police have conscripted all Government officials as special constables and armed them with waddies in order to resist the activities of turbulent unemployed. Bank officials have been ordered to remain within the banks and use their firearms
if necessary. The Communists hoisted a red flag above a tent where. the majority of the men are quartered in Liberty Square.
The Government Resident has received a telegram from the Federal Government oifering to find employment for the men in peanut growing at 30s a week until the crop is harvested.
A cable received on Tuesday stated: A hundred unemployed marched the streets of Darwin to-day and finally locked them-
selves in a room with the Government Re-
sident, the chief health officer and two members of the advisory commission. They then demanded a sustenance allowance and certain other privileges which the ' Government Resident was unable to grant owing to lack of money. The police. arrived, burst into the room and dispersed the- men, who gathered on the verandah and defied the police. The men announced . they intended to remain there. The police, although unarmed, declare they can deal with the situation.
