ELTHAM BOROUGH AFFAIRS

MAYOR’S ANNUAL REVIEW.

In reviewing the operations of the Eltham Borough Council for the past year the Mayor (Mr. I. J. Bridger) stated on Wednesday that they had started the year with a debit balance of £3327 and reduced it to £2930 at the end of the year, an improvement of nearly £4OO. There was still a substantial amount in rates outstanding which would, if collected, considerably reduce the indebtedness. If everyone paid his rates promptly they would be able to reduce the amount of the rates, collected by £5OO per annum, continued the Mayor, and he suggested that it would be profitable to consider some measures to achieve this end. Roads and footpaths were all in good condition. In the borough there were 14 miles of roads, of which 12 miles were tarred.

Mr. Bridger paid a tribute to the work of the town clerk, Mr. A. J. MacPherson, and the borough staff generally, and expressed his appreciation of the support lie hadjreceived from the councillors during the year.

STRATFORD WINTER SHOW.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of the Stratford Poultry and Winter Show Association was held last night, Air. A. J. Davey presiding over a good, attendance. The report and balance-sheet, picviously published, were adopted. The chairman said that last year’s show had not been as successful as the previous one. Looking over the balance-sheet he could see a number oi ways in which improvements could have been made. A large sum had had to be paid in wages and he suggested liiar, office-bearers this year should endeav-, our to have as much work as possible done by volunteers. With a probable drop in the income in view, owing to the financial stringency, it would be advisable to reduce expenditure. He thought many of the prizes had been too liberal, and shotild be cut down. There was a credit of £37 and £52 had been paid off the building. There were 100 members and he saw no reason why the number should not be increased to 500. if present members exerted themselves.

The election of officers resulted: Patron. Mr. W. J. Polson, M.P.; president, Mr. A. J. Davey;, vice-presidents, Messrs A. W. Reid, S. A. Mann and G. T. Gibbons; treasurer, Air. H. Burmeister; secretary, Air. F. T. Hale (protern); executive, Afessrs M. Gerhhoefer, H. J. Kirkwood, S. Reader, W. Cannon,. J. 11. Ward, H. Campbell, J. Al. Steiner, C. Murray, W. AlcAloon, Al. Knox and R. Wellington; auditor, Air. G. A. Carter; honorary solicitor, Air. R. V. Kay; general committee, 31 were elected. The secretary, Air. F. T. Hale, was voted an honorarium of £2l. He donated a £5 5s cup to the association. Steps will be taken to have the annual balance on December 31 of each year and the annual meeting as soon afterwards as possible. The chairman reported on the annual conference of New Zealand egg producers’ associations. A remit was passed, he said, to have all eggs graded and to have chilled eggs stamped, as such to prevent their affecting detrimentally prices obtained for fresh eggs. PERSONALS.
