INDIAN DISASTER

TWO HUNDRED DROWNED GHASTLY TOLL OF CYCLONE .RIVER BOAT TURNS TURTLE GREAT DAMAGE ON SHORE By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 11.30 p.m. Calcutta, April 30. Only 24 of 250 passengers and crew of a Bengal river steamer which was wrecked in a terrific cyclone to-day are definitely known to have been saved, and the death roll is unlikely to be less than 200. The which was anchored half a mile from the banks, turned turtle in five minutes after the cyclone burst, carrying the majority of the passengers and crew with it. Only a few of the panic-stricken company donned lifebelts. Five men were saved by clinging to the floating gangway. Eight others took refuge on the steamer’s hull, 18 inches of which remained above the water. The cyclone lasted four and a half lours, causing widespread destruction. Many villages were wrecked and hundreds of people are homeless.
