WESTOWN RATEPAYERS
PROPOSED TRAM EXTENSIONS.
With the idea of arranging their campaign with regard to the tramways extensions loan the ratepayers of Westown met last evening in the Westown Hall, Mr. V. C. Davies presiding. Messrs. S. G. Smith, M.P., and F. Amoore (councillors); Mr. G. Wyatt (tramway manager) and Mr C. Clark (borough engineer) were among those present. The total number of houses above tho tram terminus was 125, said Mr. Davies. Of that number 100 were in the borough. The estimated population, allowing four par house, was '5OO. This growth as compared with seven or eight years ago Mr. Davies attributed to the extension of the tramway, system to its presen terminus, and said this alone was sufficient to warrant the sanctioning of the loan. Tho rate pledged fon the loan worked out at 2s 4d on a section worth £250. Mr. Smith said that if the people patronised the trams when they got them there would be no necessity for striking the rate. The rate had to be levied as security foi the loan. Mr. J. D. Sole spoke of the generous Westown had met the council in giving manner in which the ratepayers of property' along the route for widening purposes. This cost the council nothing except the amount necessary for replacing fences. In answer to a ratepayer Mr. Wyatt said that six months would see the job completed, four being required to get the necessary material to New Plymouth. With regard to time-tables, it was the policy of his department . always to consult the progressive society or some such interested body as to the numbers using the service at different hours.
