PRODUCE BOARD’S POWER
question of personnel — .T» RESOLUTION OF FARMERS’ UNION. HON. G. W. FORBES MAKES REPLY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. "That the personnel of the New Zealand Dairy Produce 80-i d consist of dairy producers’ representatives only and that the salaries and fees paid be considerably reduced.” This decision of the executive of .the New Zealand Farmers’ Union recently was forwarded to the Minister of Agriculture (the Hon. (3. W. Forbes). ‘ln my opinion,” states the Minister in reply, “so long as the board is vested with powers of control oyer produce owned by persons engaged in the business of sellers of such produce outside the Dominion it is only equitable that such interests should have due representation on the board. “It is further considered that, having regard to the influence which’ the exercise of these powers of control can exert upon the welfare of the Dominion generally, the Government should also be represented on the board. I should here like to point out that the total number of members of the board, outside the nine representatives elected by the producers themselves, is only three two Government nominees and one merchants’ representative. This being so it is evident that to all intents and purposes the board is a board of prodiicers whose representatives are in a position to determine the policy of the board, provided unanimity exists among them.’
