WAVERLEY CAMP CONCLUDES

ATHLETICS AND SHOOTING. The annual camp of the First Battalion, the Taranaki Regiment, held at the Waverley racecourse, concluded yesterday, when over 400 officers and men, including 50 members of the Wellington-West Coast Regiment, left by train for different parts of the province. Following the ground parades and physical drills, field manoeuvres and tactical exercises occupied the time in the latter stages of the camp. An inspection by Major-General R. Young, Officer Commanding the New Zealand Forces, and Brigadier White, was made on Friday, and they took part in the manoeuvres.

On Saturday afternoon a scratch swimming race, 200 yards, was held for a cup. Sergeant H. St. George (A Company) was the winner, with Corp. A. S. Robson (B company) second, and Lieut. J. Thomas (C company) third.

Padres G. H. Gavin and Miller conducted divine services on Sunday morning, and in the afternoon a tabloid athletic meeting was held. The Parititu Cup is the trophy for the cross-country race, instituted in 1927. Results were: —

Cross-Country Race.—Private M. J. Steiner, No. 14 Platoon (D. Coy.), 1; Private D. Evans, No. 8 Platoon (B Coy.), 2; Private C. N. Boswell, No. 9 Platoon (C Coy.), 3. The championship points won by the companies, with B Company in the lead, were:—

A Company.—High jump 4 points, putting the shot 2, long jump 4, 100 yards sprint 21, 50 yards backwards race 1, relay 3; total, 16| points; placing third. B Company (in the same order). —2|, 3,3, 4,4; total, 18J points; first place. C. Company.—-1, 1,1, 1,3, 1; 8 points; fourth place. D Company. —2j, 4,2, 24, 2,4; 17 points; second place. Lewis Gun Match (Egmont Cup). —No. 1 Platoon team (A Coy.), Sergeant G. S. Slyfield (in charge), Corporal H. B. Mace (marksman), Privates H. Billing and H. Olson, 20 hits, 1.

Morrison Cup (best marksman in battalion). —Sergeant Mills (D Coy.), 77 points, 1; Sergeant V. C. Betts (D Coy), 73 points, 2.
