EX-SERVICEMEN GATHER

KING COUNTRY CONFERENCE. HOSPITABLE NATIVES AT KAWHIA (By Wire —Special to News.) Te Kuiti, Last Night. The fifth annual reunion of King Country returned soldiers was held during the week-end at Kawhia and was one of the biggest gatherings of returned men that have taken place hereabouts for some time. Members of the Te Kuiti, Hamilton, Te Awamutu, Otorohanga and other branches of the Returned Soldiers’ Association attended. Mr. J. K. Dodds (president of the Te Kuiti Association) was in the chair at the gathering -on Saturday evening and General Sir George Richardson was present as the guest of honour. Saturday’s proceedings comprised a conference, followed by a social gathering, and on the following day excursions were made to various parts of the harbour.

On their return from the harbour the men were entertained by the natives at a kianga, where food cooked in a

hongi was served. General Richardson presented the natives with a flag on behalf of the returned men in recognition of the natives’ continued hospitality when reunions have been held at Kawhia.

Sister Reidy, matron of the Kawhia Hospital, also attended the reunion by special invitation, complimentary reference being made with regard to her work among returned men, for which she is known throughout the Auckland province.
