' ' This district, which in the past has been .celebrated for its fine fruit, has , for the first time on record an absolute j dearth of stone fruit of any variety. , From Pehu and Purangi comes the same complaint. Apples, however, are plenti- , ful, but the codlin moth is very active ( this season in this class of fruit. , A big mob of sheep from Gisborne, brought by Mr, C. Mumby, of North Matau, made the long trek safely, and arrived in prime condition. The switchboard at the post office for the extra telephones has not yet been , fixed, and the usefulness of the new Junction Road line is somewhat circumscribed. The new subscribers on this line are . Messrs. G. and W.. Rawlinson, S. Ayers and F. Moody. Another telephone line is to be erected shortly up the Mangamaire and South Matau Roads. , The-Pehu Settlers’. Association is applying to the. Minister of Public Works for the.expenditure this season of £l6OO, money’.raised.*by the settlers to make the Tangitu tunnel, and to be handed back by. the Government for metalling. The special, loan to complete tile metalling, for which a subsidy of £2 to £1 has been promised, cannot be raised at present as the Clifton county has reached the limit (£5000) of its allocations. The settlers point out that this route is the direct one from the coast to the main trunk railway, and must - course of time be a main or secondary' highway, and that the settlers are loading themselves with the special rate, which will save the Government a big expense. The present spell of fine weather, which has now lasted for six days, has been very welcome, as it has enabled fanners to get in their hay, and has made a wonderful improvement'to the roads, which are now quite dry and cars are running without chains through places where last week they, would have been stuck, even with (Mains. Sheepfarmers, too, are taking full advantage of the dry spell to push their .lambshearing through. Mrs. Bond and family, who have been the guests of Mrs. P. Rolfe, have -returned to New Plymouth. Mrs. Waterson, sen., of Dargaville, is J the guest of her daughter, Mrs. G. Jensen. Mrs. F. Waterson, who has been spending a few weeks with Mrs. G. Jensen, has returned home. Mrs. S. Robinson and Miss D. Downey, of Napier, who have been the guests of Mrs. H. Larsen, have left for Wanganui. Miss M. Bond, who has been staying with Mrs. L. Ayers, has returned to ’ New Plymouth. . Master G. Kear, of Stratford, is. the guest of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Smellie. Mr. G. Chapman, of Ohura, spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. E. McCoard. Miss Ruby Peters, who has been spending a few weeks in Inglewood, has returned home. , Messrs. C. and D. Mumby are the - guests of Mr. and Mrs. K. Mumby. I Farmers are making great prepara--1 tions for the annual sheep fair, which is to be held by the Loan and Mercantile . Agency early in February. Record entries are expected.
