GENERAL ITEMS. Of great interest to the dairying community are particulars of returns received from the farming of a 49-acre section on the outskirts of Hawera. From a herd of 33 cows it is anticipated. from present figures, that well over 13,0001 b. of butter-fat will be taken for this season. The secret of success is stated to be in judicious top-dressing and selection of paddocks. “I have never seen so much white clover at this time of the year/’ remarked a South Taranaki resident of 50 years’ standing to a Daily News representative. White clover is exceptionally prevalent over practically the whole of the district, and in some places the ground is a white carpet of clover flowers. The- season, however, is not a good one for the beekeeper, the absence of sunny weather being detrimental to honey production. Miss Jean MacLachlan, teacher of national dancing, announces that she will resume tuition at her studio, Egmont Street, Hawera. Miss McLachlan is the unbeaten champion Highland dancer of New Zealand. She has taught dancing and is Well known not only in Hawera, W in New Plymouth, Eltham and Stratford. ' Entries for the Eltham Amateur Athletic Association’s sports meeting on Thursday, February 13, will close with the secretary, Mr. R. McWilliam, on Monday. The programme includes running, cycling and Highland events. ALPINISTS MEET. CLUB’S RECENT ACTIVITY. PROGRESS OF FANTHAM’S HUT. Matters of interest to alpinists were discussed at the executive meeting of the Mount Egmont Alpine Club on Wednesday night, presided over by Mr. L. O. Hooker. A letter from the managing director of the Mt. Cook Tourist Company stated: “We are very pleased to know that your trip to Mount Cook was enjoyed and was apparently regarded as a complete success, although weather conditions were not of the best. We may say that the organisation of your party was so complete and its members so appreciative of everything at the Hermitage that both the guests and the staff regarded their presence as a pleasure.” Considerable discussion took place on matters in connection with the Fantham’s Peak hut. With the object of providing quick transport of the material to the top of the peak working bees will be held each week-end in February. It was decided to allocate £3O from the club funds towards the cost of transporting material. Members lending their cars are to be reimbursed according to a scale adopted. Club tramps will be discontinued until the completion of the hut.

It was announced that Mes.srs. F. W. Vosseler, president of the . Tarariia Tramping Club, and Harper, vice-presi-dent of the New Zealand Alpine Club, had promised to deliver lectures, with lantern displays, relative to alpine climbing in New Zealand, to members of the Mount Egmont Club at an early date. ~ The desirability of the formation of a New Zealand alpine association in the interests of, and embracing all, the climbing and tramping clubs, was discussed at length, but nothing definite was determined.
