AMATEUR ATHLETIC EVENTS

EXCELLENT FORM DISPLAYED. HAMILTON DEFEATS CAMBTE. The Hawera Amateur Athletic Club held a successful club evening on the showgrounds last night. In spite of thekeen wind that blew across the ground there was a fair number of contestants. Good form was displayed, there being a number of very close finishes, particularly in the cycle events and the final of the 100 yards. Particular interest centred in the meeting of K. Cambie and J. Hamilton in the 100yds. Hamilton won the first heat and in the second Cambie was blocked, but came round fast to finish m second place. The final proved exciting, the placed men finishing almost in line. Cambie should prove a valuable asset to the club. Results are: — 120yds hurdles.—First heat: A. Blair (10yds, 1 down) 1, A. PERSONAL. Mr. A. Gray, headmaster of the Hawcra High School, returned to Hawera on Thursday evening from a holiday spent at Christchurch. The death occurred at Hawera on Monday of Mr. Timothy Ring, one of the Taranaki pioneers and a member of the Royal Irish Regiment during the days of the Maori disturbances. The deceased, who was 85 years of age, is survived by two daughters, Mesdames F. Mourie and J. Russell, of Manaia. The funeral takes place at Oamaru today. Mr. J. W. Paterson, of Kapuni, has returned from a visit to South Canterbury. His health, which had been indifferent, is much improved. Motions of sympathy with the relatives of the victims of the recent Tasman Glacier tragedy, and with Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Bates, Kaponga, were carried by the Mount Egmont Alpine Club’s executive meeting last night. Police Commissioner W. B. Mcllveney was in Hawera yesterday and inspected the police of South Taranaki, who paraded in charge of Sergeant Henry. He left during the afternoon for Wanganui.

GENERAL ITEMS. Robert Florida James Lowe, for the third breach of his prohibition order was fined £5 and costs by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Hawera Magistrate’s Court yesterday. For failing to give way to traffic approaching from his right, R. M. Sharrock was fined. £2 and costs by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Hawera yesterday. On the application of Mr. T. A. Kinmont, Claris Mary Gwendoline Matson was successful in obtaining, in the Hawera Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., the issue of separation, maintenance and guardianship orders in respect to herself and her three children against Matthew George Matson. Failure to maintain and cruelty were the grounds on which complainant based her application, the magistrate allowing her maintenance of 19s a week for herself and 10s a week for each child. A lecture on the British Syrian Mission was given at Manaia on Monday evening by Miss Turner, who is North Island secretary for the mission. The Rev. B. Dudley presided and at the conclusion a collection was taken at the door. Members of the Hawera Gospel Hall and district congregations gathered at Te Ngutu Domain yesterday for their annual picnic. An interesting programme of sports and races was provided for tho children, the attempts made by blindfold competitors to knock coconuts off a string provoking much amusement. Attention is drawn in an advertisement to the fact that the High School will reopen on Tuesday, February 4, and that the headmaster (Mr. A. Gray) will be in atttendance at the school to-day, Saturday, and Monday, to meet prospective pupils. At the Central Mart, Hawera, this morning at 11 o’clock, Mr. J. C. Smith will sell fruit and this afternoon will conduct a sale of furniture and sundries. Messrs R. P. Morrissey and Co. will sell by auction to-day at their rooms, Union Street, Hawera, fruit, vegetables, produce and household effects and sundries.
