RADIATOR RUNS DRY

WATER PROCURED FROM HOTEL. ‘T was there for the purpose of procuring some water for the radiator of my car and was carrying it when accosted by Constable Pidgeon,” wrote Charles E, Trott, in explanation of a charge preferred against him of having been found after hours on the licensed premises of the Nonnanby Hotel on January 9. He had had no liquor, he stated, and pleaded guilty. “There was no necessity for him to go to the hotel to get water,” said Constable Pidgeon, “as there is a service station next to the hotel.” A fine of fl and costs was imposed bv the Magistrate, Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M. John Thacker, who was also charged with being on the same premises on the same date after hours, was also fined £1 and costs. UNLICENSED RADIO SET. NORMANBY NATIVE CHARGED. For having possession of an unlicensed radio set a native of Norma nby, Whakauriri Tumahaki, was fined £1 and costs by Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., in the Hawera Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The defendant wrote stating that he was ignorant of the necessity of taking out a license for the set, but had done so immediately he became aware of his obligations. Sergeant Henry prosecuted for the police. William S. Little, assistant radio inspector, said that on January 15 he inspected defendant’s premises and found him in possession of an unregistered set. The following day it was registered. The set was capable of operating and had been installed in October, 1929. AERO CLUB ACTIVITIES. A TARANAKI CONFERENCE. A meeting of the committee of the Hawera Aero Club was held on Saturday afternoon, Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., being in the chair. It was reported that the timber for the erection of the proposed hangar at the aerodrome was to arrive yesterday and that work would be commenced at once under the supervision of the club’s honorary architect, Mr. J. A. Duffill. An invitation was received from the Marlborough Aero Club for delegates to attend a meeting of representatives of all aero clubs in the Dominion at Blenheim on February 21. Following a communication received from Wing-Commander Grant Dalton it was decided to extend an invitation to the New Plymouth and Wanganui Clubs and to the Stratford and Eltham committees to attend a conference to be held at Hawera on February 26. The voting power of each club at the conference was fixed at four and that of each committee at two. Formal notice of a grant of £lOO was received from the Hawera Borough Council. HAWERA SWIMMING CARNIVALS. TARANAKI CHAMPIONSHIPS. At a meeting of the executive of the { Hawera Amateur Swimming Club it was decided to proceed with arrangements for the swimming carnival to be held at Hawera on February 5. The Taranaki championships will be held at Hawera on February 12, the date originally set aside at the annual meeting of the centre in December. With regard to the question of prizes the executive resolved that it did not favour the issue of certificates as it had been definitely decided by the committee prior to the annual meeting of the centre to have a die made and to have sufficient, medals struck for the purpose. HAWERA ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY. Arrangements have been made for the work of the Hawera Orchestral Society during the coming season and with the inclusion of several new members a most successful year is anticipated. Practices will be • resumed next week under the conductorship of Mr. H. C. A. Fox, who has resumed his work with the society after his absence from the Dominion. For the first concert the following numbers have been selected: —Overture, “Shamus O’Brien" (Sir C. V. Stanford); “Americana,” suite (Thurbon); “Hungarian Rapsody,” No. 2 (Liszt); “Pagliacci,” prologue (Leoncavallo); character sketch, “Butterfly” (Bendix); incidental music from “Monsieur Bcaucairc” (intermezzo, motif); gavotte, “Chart des Voyageurs” and march theme; “Ride of the Valkyries" (Wagner). HAWERA HIGH SCHOOL. At the examinations in Pitman’s shorthand, field in December, the following pupils of the Hawera High School were successful in gaining certificates: Elementary certificates. —Peggy Yearbury, Winifred Howell, Barbara Foy. Theory certificates.—Joyce Crutch, Norma Taylor. Speed certificates. —60 words per minute: Joyce Crutch, Edmund Ryan, Ivy Reading, Thomas Drake; 80 words per minute, Thelma Mullins, Dorothy Warcup, Elva Reid; 90 words per minute, Myra Glass; 110 words per minute, Kathleen Goodwin. NORMANBY NEWS. Arrangements are well in hand for the Nonnanby horticultural show which will take place -n February 25 and 26. The schedules arc now being distributed. There are numerous special prizes. With the completion of the work on the Ketcmarae Road, the ratepayers will be well served as far as good roads are concerned. Mr. and Mrs. A. Millar, Suva, are at 1 present the guests of Mr. B. C. Gibson. Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Linn left by car on Sunday for Opotiki and Auckland. i Miss Myra Atkins is spending a holiday in New Plymouth.
