UNUSUAL PROSECUTION
SUNDAY AFTERNOON TRADING. OFFENCE AT CEMETERY. The unusual offence of soliciting custom among mourners at a cemetery on a Sunday o was charged against Alfred W. Sakey, monumental mason, in the Onehunga Police Court on Monday. Sakey was charged that on December 29, at the Hillsborough cemetery, he did openly carry on his business. A plea of guilty was entered. Sergeant D. J. O’Neill said that as a result of complaints received Constable Walton was sent to the Hillsborough cemetery to watch accused. He saw accused in conversation with a woman, and it was admitted that arrangements were then made to have flower stands placed on a certain grave. Ten shillings wag paid and a receipt was made out. The offence was looked upon by the police as fairly serious. because other people in the same business were complaining. Mr. Schramm,- for the defence,, said that accused had only a small business, and Sunday afternoon woh almotst the only day on which he could get- into touch with his customers. Accused was fined £l, with costs 18s.
