IMPORTS FROM AMERICA

SLIGHT UPWARD TENDENCY

DECLINE OVER PAST FEW YEARS.

LOSS OF CASE OIL SHIPMENTS.

The American import trade at the port of New Plymouth, which had previously shown a decline, has been increased by 2162 tons during 1929 as compared with the figures for the previous year. In 1928 a total of 6812 tons was handled at New Plymouth in five shipments, but last year the tonnage was increased to 8974, and the shipments to six. Due chiefly to the system of bulk oil distribution, the port’s direct import trade with North America has declined considerably since 1926, when the shipments totalled 15,257 tons. Previously vessels bringing case oil brought general cargo as well. At the same time there are still small shipments of asphalt and sulphur cargoes from the Gulf of Mexico ports. Details of shipments from America during the past seven years are: —

1923 (11 shipments) 13,038 tons 1924 (11 shipments) / .. 10,471 tons 1925 ( 9 shipments) 13,677 tons 1920 (13 shipments) 15,257 tons 1927 ( 9 shipments) 7,682 tons 1928 ( 5 shipments) 6,812 tons 1929 ( 6 shipments) 8,974 tons
