MAHOE SCHOOL YEAR

BREAKING-UP CEREMONY. An exhibition of school work marked the break-up of the Mahoe school. Lunch was served in the hall, after which, in spite of the adverse weather, races were organised for the children. Visitors then adjourned to the hall, where Mr. Cave, chairman of the committee, presented a gift book to every pupil and a toy to all junior children of the district.

Medals from the boys’ and girls’ clubs were presented to Dulcie Richardson and Roy Jones for their successes in the root crop competition and calfrearing respectively. Attendance certificates were presented to Freda Steiner, Edward Steiner, Donald Dorflinger, Walter Dorflinger, Chris, Pearl and May Thompson, George, Harry and Daisy Ward. Thelma Ricketts, Iris Anderson and Iris Schwieters were presented with prize money won at the Stratford show. In recognition of his work as headmaster; Mr. A. J. Carroll was the recipient of tortoiseshell cigarette case, while the assistant, Miss L. E. Lawn, received a cut glass scent bottle. In making these presentations Mr. Cave paid a tribute to the teaching staff. Dulcie Richardson, on behalf of the senior scholars, made a presentation to the teachers.

In acknowledging the gifts Mr. Carroil referred to the splendid work of the committee and thanked its members for their co-operation and support.

HUIP.OA SCHOOL CONCERT. A successful concert was held in the schoolroom on December 19 at the breaking-up for the holidays. A large crowd was present. At the conclusion every’ child received a prize. The dux prize was won by Gwen Reid. The special prizes presented by Mr. Rex Watson for the most improved boy and girl in the school were won by Flossie Ritchie and Colin Wallace. Miss Bray supplied the music at the practices and concert. The programme was: Opening chorus; recitation, Doug. Fraser; pianoforte solo, Gwen Reid; junior girls’ chorus; recitation, Tui Fraser; recitation, primers; playlet-, “The School,” boys; senior girls’ chorus; pianoforte solo, Joyce Taylor; folk dancing, seniors; recitation, Nita Reid; chorus, seniors; pianoforte solo, Doris Martin; dialogue from Tom Sawyer, L. Neal and W. Goldup; story, Edward Woods; Maori canoe song, senior-pupils; duet, E. Woods and , E. Jarvis; play. “Too Greedy by Half"; ; final chorus. j Medals for the year’s calf-rearing were presented to Colin Wallace (third 1 prize, condition), Dorothy Mitchell (first, prize, dairy type), Winnie Jarvis (second prize, condition), Edward Wood (first prize, condition. Shorthorn-Jersey type). A dance was held after the concert, the floor being well filled. Messrs. G. Stanford and G. Running were masters of ceremonies. Mrs. J. Reid supplied the music. HUIROA PERSONAL ITEMS. Mr. Les Woods has returned home from hospital. Mib. J. Martyn had the misfortune to have her finger caught*in the cogs of a separator. The finger was stripped of flesh. Mr. and Mis. W. Christie, who have been in the district for a few days, have returned to Feilding. Mr. and Mrs. Williams, Wanganui, have taken up residence in the Huiroa district. < RUGBY ROAD NEWS. 1 Rugby Road, like everywhere else, is having more than its share of rain, and farmers are ail downhearted and depressed owing to not being able to get their hay in. Oats will soon be beyond saving at ail. The milk yield is dropping rapidly. An accident befel little Mavis Welch on the eve of the school breaking up. During play she jumped on a kerosene tin and cut a toe very badlj’, being laid up for the Christmas holidays. Christmas ; _.sed quietly, but most people had a few visitors. Among them was little Brian Dey, of New Plymouth, who was the guest of his grand-parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. Dey., Mrs. Lash and family, of Stratford, are the guests of her sister, Mrs. Byrne. Mrs. Reardon, has her neice staying with her, and Mrs. Davis has visitors. Mr. and Mrs. Martin were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Welch. Mr. Hooker is the guest of his daughter, Mrs. J. Fabish. Miss Vera Huzziff visited her home for Christmas. Mr. John Mahon, who had been for some time in the Stratford hospital returned home to spend Christmas with Mr. and Mrs. Rumball. Mr. R. Rumball, who was in the Hawera hospital, also returned home for Christmas.
