T.J.C. RACES CONCLUDE
ATTENDANCE MARRED BY WEATHER
WENDAY’S NEW PLYMOUTH HANDICAP
MELISSA AND BONOGUE DEAD HEAT
The Taranaki Jockey Club’s Christmas meeting was .concluded yesterday under unfavourable climatic .conditions. Heavy mist in the morning, which culminated in rain in the late afternoon, interfered with the attendance and this, together with the fact that there were again three one-dividend fields, had a detrimental effect on the totalisator returns, which on the .whole did not slump as much
as might have been expected. Racing was again of an interesting character, starts being good Land finishes-'01086: The New Plynipntii handicap attracted a field of nine and was won by the Waikato mare Wenday, with the veterans, Yoma and Hipo, filling'the minor places- The Inglewood Handicap attracted a field of only four, but.it provided one of ..the best finishes of the day, the judge being unable to separate Melissa and Bonogne with Llanore only a neck away.
FORM WAS GOOD TO FOLLOW
DAY OUT FOR TARANAKI HORSES. FOUR FAVOURITES GET HOME. The club was unfortunate .in striking unfavourable weather- for,.the- concluding day. Misty weather that threatened rain and that did develop,, .into rjain just prior to the sixth race kept a. con? siderable number, especially from .inland, away, and though there• was a good'attendance,: the gate re turns showed a. decline on those of the second, day last year. 'This naturally was reflected on the totalizator investments; and ■as there were three one-dividend races-r two with' four horses and one with five —a decrease in the investments was to be expected. The staff, under the super-: vision of Mr. L. Rea, handled £18,135, as compared with £22,906 10s on the second day last year, a decrease of £4771 10s. The total for the meeting was £42,317 10z, as compared with £48,650 10s last year, a decrease of £6339. As on the first day the public had nothing to coinplain of from the viewpoint of sport.. Even though fields in some instances were small, racing was of an interesting charactor. Mr. A. Vincent was in good . form at the barrier, and though Mr. H. Coyle had brought the fields close together —go close that on one occasion the judge could not separate the first two —Mr. W. P. Ruesell, in the judge’s box, hoisted his numbers with- dispatch. Strangely enough, the meeting opened and closed with a dead-heat. First day’s form,.proyed. a useful guide and on only one occasion did the public go astray, letting Marica come home the, outsider of the field iii a four horse race. Including the dead-heat, they sorted out four firet'and four second favourites. The going was somewhat holding after the rain of the previous night and of the afternoon, but nevertheless it stood up well, a tribute to the care bestowed on its preparation by Mr. J. Blewman. The principal event, the New Plymouth Handicap, attracted a field of nine. The Swell was made a hot favourite. ' The little fancied Flying Shot played the role of pace-maker, but nearing the straight the ,' Waikato mare Wenday drew on terms and in the run home went to the .front ■ and, staving off a hot challenge by Yoma, gained the verdict by half a. length, with Hipo. third and Flying Shot fourth. Wenday was second in the same race last ryear. The Inglewood Handicap, the open six, waa contested by a field of four. The New Plymouth pair, Bonogne and Melissa, carried most of the money. Melissa, who won the event -last year, looked like repeating the performance, but Bonogne came with a great burst over the final stages to dead-heat, with Llanore only a neck away. Taranaki trainers had a day out. With the. exception of the big race, which went to the Waikato trainer, A. Brady, Taranaki “cleaned up” the programme. •: Hawera’ captured four races and New Plymouth the other three, in- ■ eluding ■ the two dead-heaters. - ■ Mr. B. N.r Sandilands, stipendiary steward, was present but found little to quibble at, there being no inquiries. The only untoward incident was in the hurdles, where J oke Form lost his rider at the stand fence, but A. Linton escaped injury. Prior to the start of the Warea Hack Stakes the favourite, Anbridge, fllipped-and unseated Jockey W. Taylor, but it made no difference, the favourite winning easily. The Military Band, under the baton of Conductor R. E. Cumming, rendered an enjoyable programme of music. The catering by the Hygienic and the refreshment booth, admirably conducted by Mr. A. Lile, were of a high standard. The officials again attended to their duties so efficiently that the races were run off to time. Mr. C. 8., Webster, the new secretary, came through the ordeal of his first meeting with credit. The president (Mr. L. A. Nolan), vice-presi-dent (Mr. J. McLeod), the committee and stewards were all most assiduous in their attention to the comfort of visitors. DETAILS OF THE RACES. The third horse was only a neck away. Abbess was fourth. Time, Imin "Io 4— ... DESCRIPTION OF THE RACING JOYSPEAR WINS COMFORTABLY. (By “Moturoa.”) The public would have, nothing but Banbridge for the Fitzroy Handicap and the Tonbridge gelding was-sent out £l5O better backed than Joyspear and Fortalice, with anything else at a good price. Monoie was actually first to move from a good start, but when they settled down Tentcall was piloting Joyspear, Monoie and Fortalice, with Grand Marnia tailing off. At the half mile Tentcall and Eortalice were two lengths clear of Cor wen, Joyspear, Rossferry, Monoie and Banbridge, and the order did not suffer much change across the top except that Tentcall was under the whip. Fortalice and Joyspear ran past the leader as they swung into the straight, but at -the distance Joyspear had assumed command from Fortalice and Banbridge and Rossferry threw out a strong challenge. J oyspear, however, had too much, in hand and won easily by a good half- length from Rossferry, who cut Fortalice out of second money by a head. Banbridge was a fair fourth and then came Miss Pakake, Grand Marnia, Corwen and Tentcall.
BELLE STAR COMES HOME AGAIN.
The defection of Green Linnett and Panatrope left only four in the Juvenile Handicap and Valpre and Belle Star dominated the betting market, Valpre being a warm, fancy. Lady Lulu gave trouble at the barrier and was left half a dozen lengths when the tapes went up, Belle Star being smartest to move from Valpre and Double Red, but at the half mile the. latter was hunted along and across the top was two lengths ahead of Belle Star, with a similar distance to Valpre. As they turned for home Belle Star shot up to the leader and had run across on to the rails as they came into the straight to come home a comfortable winner from Valpre, who finished fast to beat Double Red out of second place by a couple of lengths. Lady Lulu was some distance 'back. Belle Star was greatly improved with her race on Thursday and is a long’way from finished winning; yet. Valpre is staying bn better this season and she should win some good six-fur-lorig races. ,i: JUST SO A CLASS GALLOPER. To miss the jump out, strike trouble twice in the first three furlongs, be apparently hopelessly hemmed in at the entrance to the straight and then come around six horses strung across the straight to win was a particularly impressive performance on the part of Just So, and it stamped the Chief Ruler mare as an outstanding galloper. Marica was the only defection and a lastminute coin mission sent Just So out nearly £3OO better backed than Green Acre, Abbess and Monaloff in a good betting race. Peg Black delayed the start for some time and when the tapes went up Green Acre was badly left. The rest moved off in line, Callapat settling down first from Potency, Abbess and Monaloff’. At the half mile Abbess was showing up on the outside of Callapat, Espion, ° Monaloff and Potency, with Green Acre and Just So next. Going on to the bend Callapat was steadied and Monaloff ran up to Abbess,.the pair making play across the 'top two lengths ahead of Callapat and Peg Black, with Green Acre and Just So next. The latter moved up on the fence, but when they straightened up for the run home Monaloff, Callapat, Abbess and Peg Black were abreast, with Green Acre on the outside of Espion and Just So immediately ’behind. Challenges came from all quarters and at the distance Callapat had taken up the running with Monaloff, Abbehs, Espion and Green Acre handy and Just So coming from a seemingly impossible position on the outside. Callapat was first to succumb to pressure and Monaloff was left ahead of Abbess, while Just So threw out a desperate challenge 20 yards from the post. In a great finish the flying Just So just got home by a short head from Monaloff, while Green Acre nosed Callapat out of the minor placing, with Abbess and Espion right up. \V. Taylor is riding in great form and he handled Just So in a masterly fashion over the last furlong. ROYAL ACRE STROLLS IN. With Omeo out of the hurdles the public could see no further than Royal Acre but their small dividend was a certainty five furlongs from-the judge. Joke Form delayed the start and Michael Shiinose ,was left when the tapes went up. Royal Acre and Joke Form moved away, bcist' but at the second fence Whenuanui had run up to Joke Form and Royal Acre w as steadied, that was the order. into the straight, a break to Waitaunaha and Quillfire. Wlienuanui and Joke Form took oil together Ut.‘ the fence in front of the stands, f '6ut Joke Form hit hard and droppigV his : pilot, leaving Wlienuanui to pilot Royiil Acre, Waitaunaha, Quillfire and . Parioriiiiia out of the stiaigiit. Across :: W. .far bend Whenuanui was two leiiifths clear of Royal Acre, with a similar distance to Waitaunaha and the others', well back. The field closed up as they raced into the back stretch and at the jump at the five-furlong post Whenuanui crashed hard and Royal Acre jumped to the front. Turning for home Royal'Acre was five lengths ahead of Whenuanui and Quillfile and Waitaunaha was moving up. Royal Acre was well clear into the straight from Quillfire, but both fenced poorly. Royal Acre had too much pace and won easing up by four and a-half lengths from Quill" fire, who was two lengths ahead of Waitaunaha, with Whenuanui fourth and Panorama a poor fifth. Royal Acie won with a lot in hand and. should go well at. Stratford. . Whenuanui-- will win a race' when he improves- in -his fencing.
WENDAY HOLDS OFF OLD YOMA.
Calamine dropped out of the New Plymouth Handicap and the public put in on The’ Swell as if the race was all over, but they were given a very poor run for .their money, .The second fancy, Wenday, well-handled by young Drinkwater, scored decisively from the veteran i’oma. Flying Shot was first away from a good start, but Monsogne was quickly chopped out and Flying Shot led Yoma, Valkon, Hipo, The Swell and Wenday out of the straight. There was a juggle for positions across the bend and into the back stretch, where Flying Shot still held sway from Yoma, Hipp, . Wenday, Mint Leaf, Opa and The Swell, with Monsogne and Valkon last. Half a mile from home Flying Shot was a length and a-half ahead of Hipo and Poma, with Wenday, Mint Leaf and Opa next. Wenday came up on the outside across the bend and was on terms with Flying Shot into the straight, with Yoma, Hipo and The Swell all handy. Wenday had sorted herself out from the field at the distance, and though old Yoma made a bold bid at the half distance he could not quite get up to the Day Comet mare, who won by a good half length. Hipo was three lengths behind Yoma, with tlie outsider, Flying Shot, a good fourth. Then came Opa, The Swell and Monsogne, with Mint Leaf and Valkon whipping on the field. Wenday won well and should race prominently at Stratford. Yoma and Hipo ran honestly, but most improvement can be looked for in The Swell. MARICA STEALS A MARCH. Only four lined up for the Uruti Handicap and the public backed Marjoram down to a “Gloaming’’ price, the favourite carrying £650 more than the winner. Marjoram was squeezed back when the tapes went up and Marica shot out several lengths clear of the others to lead out of the straight by four lengths from Latakia and Callamine. Marica was well clear of Latakia as . they entered the back stretch, the ’field being strung out like so many cows. Down the back Marica clapped on the pace and opened up a break of eight to ten lengths on the rest, Marjoram being fully half a furlong to the bad. Marica s pilot steadied her as she ran on to the bend and the field closed up slightly, but Marica had the public on toast and when the favourite seemed to have a chance the outsider ran away again in the straight and won by six lengths pulling up from Latakia, with Callamine and Marjoram tailed off. Marica was well handled by Drinkwater, who did not run the mare right out, and she should be none the worse for her race. Marjoram failed miserably and even the bad start could not excuse his ’ lamentable showing. ANBRIDGE IMPROVES - ONE. All lined up for the Hack Stakes and the public decided that Anbridge was worthy of heavy betting and Animated was the only other seriously considered. Anbridge took a "fly” at the barrier, while Araukuku was left, but at the end of a furlong Animated had joined the favourite, and the pair were five lengths ahead of Rillet, Bon Eve, Screed and Araukuku at the half mile. Animated was slightly ahead of Anbridge as they crossed the top, with three lengths to Rillet, Araukuku and B6n Eve, but the leaders were on terms again as they swung into the straight. Once in line for the judge Anbridge waltzed away from the field and won pulling rip by four lengths from Animated, with a length and a half to Araukuku and Bon Eve, Rillet and Desbroney strung out. Anbridge won well, but is not up to very high class. TOPWEIGHTS DEAD-HEAT. When Clever dropped out of the Inglewood Handicap the public were left a one-dividend field for the . “recovery stakes.” However, two dividends were eventually paid, the judge being unable to separate the topweights in a great finish. Bonogne was heavily backed, with Melissa the only other seriously fancied. From a good start Melissa and Abbess were smartest out and at the end of the first furlong Abbess was showing the way to Melissa and Llanore, with three lengths to Bonogne and Oration. Across the top Abbess, Llanore and Melissa were abreast with Bonogne coming up on the rails. Melissa carried the leaders out as they came into the straight and Bonogne shot up, only to be blocked as they came back again, and at the distance Melissa was just ahead of Llanore, with Bonogne coming again on the rails., Llanore was first to give way and in the last few strides Bonogne joined Melissa. A stride past the post the topweight was in front, but there was no mistake about a deadheat, with Llanore nearly a length back and Abbess fourth. Bonogne was unlucky to have to put up with a deadheat. DIVISION OF THE SPOILS. Belle Star’s double win and Ridgemount’s win place R. Johnson at the head of the winning owners at the New Plymouth Christmas meeting with £375. Then follow J. Fryer £295, Mrs. R. I. Caro £245, I. Lupton £230, P. A.
