SIDELIGHTS ON THE RACING.

BALLOON CAUSES MILD SURPRISE.

(By Wire—Special to News.) Palmerston N., Last Night. Balloon, the first day’s winner over the same distance, was comparatively neglected for the Kelvin Handicap and paid a good price to win. Make Up was a red hot favourite, carrying nearly £5OO more than Goldlike. Running out of the straight Kilorell, Kiriana, Vinella, Make Up and Shortly were the leaders, Balloon being at the tail of the field and again running off the course. Vinella took up the running approaching the back from Make Up, Shortly, Kilorell and Skyrider. Balloon then began to make up leeway and led into the straight from Shortly, Skyrider and Make Up. Balloon was not headed, though Goldlike, with a late run, got to within a head of him. Mothplane again filled third berth a length back. Then came Make Up, Shortly, Kiriana and Kilorell.

WARZONE PAYS- A LONG PRICE.

Another screaming favourite in Democratic had to strike his colours to the long-priced Warzone in the High weight Handicap. Aurora Borealis and Warzone led along the straight and War-

zone, Nightdew, Pale Star and Aurora Borealis was the order passing the stands. As they ran to the back, Mirabilary was fighting for her head and in a couple of, furlongs came from last to join Nightdew in the lead, with Fine Acre, Warzone and Pale Star in the next division crossing the top. Mirabilary led into the straight and drew clear, but her earlier effort told on her and when Warzone' arid then the favourite challenged, they were able to pass her at intervals of half a length and a head. Fine Acre was fourth and Nightdew and Aurora Borealis followed. PUBLIC STILL WELL ASTRAY. Glenartney was selected as a good thing for the Highden Handicap, but backers of the favourite were told to try again. Statuary was the winner and paid double figures. The. favourite and Leisure began best, with Fernden and Oral the next pair to show out. King Acre made a forward move after a couple of furlongs and was third bn the home turn, the order as they straightened- up for home being Glenartney, Leisure, King Acre and Fernden. The favourite, kept premier place till the half distance, when Fernden headed him. Then Statuary cairie with a wet sail and wore them both down to win by a length and a-half from Fernden, with Glenartney a similar distance back. Hunting Boy, Leisure and King Acre followed.' Emotion, the outsider, was finishing on from the rear.

HOYLAKE WINS IN GREAT FINISH

Silver Paper and Seatown did not have their engagements continued for the President’s Handicap. Ruanui was a staunch favourite, there being a drop of £250 to Paitonu and First Acre. Bettors had cooled off towards Hoylake, but the grey horse landed at last and rewarded his loyal supporters with a good return. From an even break Dolomite, Star Area, First Acre, Pai-' tonu, Piuthair ' arid’'Ru’dnui fan along the straight in that order, with Courageous tailed off. Running to the back stretch the order was practically the same, with Hoylake moving up from second to last.' At the half-mile, Dolomite and Star Area were together in the lead, followed by First Acre, Paitonu, Hoylake; Ruanui and Stanchion. Across the top Hoylake had run up to third position, while Stanchion also im-proved-his place at the expense of the favourite. At the straight entrance Dolomite, Star Area and Hoylake were tearing along in the lead and then ensued the best finish of the meeting. Hoyiake shot to the front, being chased closely by First Acre and Ruanui, with Stanchion drawing up on the outside. Ruanui appeared to have. Hoylake held, but the grey came again in the last twenty yards to secure tlie verdict by a very short head, with First Acre a head back, while Stanchion was placed fourth a head away. Then came Star Area and Great Charter, while Dolomite and Paitonu were at the tail. The finish .was so tight that an argument inevitably developed, but the judge , was the only-one in a position to decide. PRINCESS BETTY SCORES. The Twenty-fourth Palmerston North Stakes was no exception to the general run of failure following .favourites at the meeting, for a short odds first fancy, Paganelli, was beateri’ by the Chief Ruler filly Princess Betty, and his supporters showed a substantial loss. The field was -' bunched at the. start, the first to show up being Chrysology, Princess Betty, Roi de Vai and Paganelli. The favourite secured the inside running and at the top turn was in front of Chrysology. His army of backers breathed more freely, but well into the straight he was taken on by Chrysology and Princess Betty. The latter won in a sterling finish by half a length from Paganelli, with Chrysology threeparts of a length further back. Consent was fourth and. Miss Ransom (who was started in preference to Lady Pam) and Admiral Drake were next.

HIGH SOCIETY JUST GETS HOME.

The judge was given another facer at the conclusion of the Terrace Handicap, when he awarded the prize to High Society by a nose, while he was unable to separate the favourite, Head Serang, and Patearoa. At the rise of the barrier Patearoa, Head Serang, High Society, Roundelay 7 , Acress and Glenrossie were foremost, and at the end of a furlong Patearoa and Head Serang were together, with Roundelay, Glenrossie, High Society 7 , Footpad, Singer and Phastar bunched. The leaders were undisturbed at the straight entrance, except ’ thqt Singer had moved up into fifth place in a tightly packed field. In a. punishing finish Patearoa held on till the last stride, when High Society was. driven up to win by a nose, while Head Seraiig and Patearoa were locked together. Phastar was a good fourth, with Glenrossie, Singer and Valma next. RORY MOR’S IMPRESSIVE WIN. Teri was the elect of speculators for the Himitangi Handicap, being £5OO better backed than Rameses, but the divi-dend-payers were Rory Mor and High Faintin’, both of whom showed a good profit. Along the straight Rameses, Cerf, Borsalene and Rory Mor were in front, High Faintin’ being slow to begin. Rory Mor ran up behind Rameses as they approached the back stretch, the nearest attendants being Cerf, Botsalene, Manly and Teri. High Falutin’ was pushed up to second place at the five furlongs, and on the turn the leading division comprised Rameses, Rory Mor, High Falutin’, Cerf and Borsalene. Don Jose dashed up to the leading pair as they ran into the straight and appeared to threaten seriously, hut he faded again before the judge was reached. Rory Mor, who took -charge at the straight entrance when Rameses capitulated, went on to win from High Falutin’ by a neck, with Manly finishing very fast in third place, being beaten out of a dividend by a head. Cerf, Borsalene and the favourite followed.

FULL FEATHER UPSETS PUNTERS.

The last race, the Awapuni Handicap, was held in drenching rain, and the favourite division was again beaten. Keddar was an £BO better favourite in a big pool than Gold Dawn, with Royal Duke and Juggle heavily supported. Dobbin broke the tapes, being followed out by Silver Coot and Gold. Dawn. With a furlong and a-half co .efed, Silver Coot hit the front and crossing the top had a big break on Gohl Dawn, Royal Duke am. Full Feather Silver Coot was joined almost immediately by Full Feather in the straight and. in a great duel in the long iuri home the latter won by a long " heat’ Gold Dawn was two and a-half lengths away. Then came Juggle, Royal Duke. Keddar and Dobbin.
