TO-NIGHT’S BOXING CONTEST

SLASHING BATTLE PREDICTED. No greater assurance that to-night’s bout at the New Plymouth Opera House will be' 100 per cent, sheer pugnacity should be required than the faet that both contestants <is box-office -attrae-. tions have rarely failed to pack the house. The true test of a performer’s ability and the quality of his offerings is always reflected in the hoisting of the ‘‘house full” sign, and since the advent of Tommy Donovan to professional boxing in New Plymouth that sign has been almost invariably requisitioned when he has been one of the principals. And so it is with the visiting Australian (who by his unassuming manner has made many friends in New Ply- ; mouth). When Tommy Crowle steps ’ into the ring at Leichhardt Stadium, Sydney, he always faces a packed hall, and his fine brand of fighting has won him a warm place in the hearts of tho Australian fight fraternity. When two relentless little toilers such as Donovan and Crowle are unleashed in the arena it would appear certain that one or other must wilt under the strain of. the heavy exchanges. But each - „ possesses a sturdy frame and physical perfection, so that it is anticipated the affair will most probably go the distance —-fifteen rounds brim-full- of thrills.

In view of the fact that expenses in connection with the bout arc exceptionally heavy, the Taranaki Boxing Association was compelled, to raise prices to meet extra costs. With a record house for the Doble-DoiMvan match but one-third of a century was cleared. The present fixture will involve floo increase on the expenditure side, so that although prices have been raised the association’s staging of a high-class contest will not result m much more than a clearance of expenses. ~ A. reminder is given that to avoid the possibility of being included in the ranks of the unadmitted, patrons should take the earliest opportunity of reserving seats. j.
