RACING CARNIVAL OPENS

EGMONT CLUB’S SUMMER MEETING BRIGHT GLOW ANNEXES THE CUP NOLAN CUP FALLS TO POMPEIUS The Taranaki summer racing carnival was opened yesterday, when the first day of tne Egmont R.C. summer meeting was decided at the club’s course, Hawera, in showery weather. Though both the attendance and the totalisator returns showed a decrease it was not possible owing to the unfavourable weather conditions prevailing in the morning to say whether or not the change of dates was responsible in any way for this falling off. Certain it is that from the viewpoint of racing the day proved most successful. Throughout there were splendid fields and excellent racing. The principal race, the Egmont Cup, wms won by the Hawera trained mare Bright Glow, from a field of 12, with the Heretaunga trained Concentrate second and the Hawke’s Bay Merry Mint third. The principal sprint race, the Flying Handicap, was won by the Hastings horse Knightlike, which defeated a strong field of seven, the Heretaunga trained Cimabue being second arid the New Plymouth mare Gold Dawn third. The Nolan Cup, in which a field of 15 hacks paraded, was Avon by the Waikato trained Pompeius, with the Hawke’s Bay gelding Chopin second and the Blenheim gelding Make Up third.

SPLENDID DAY’S RACING THREE FAVOURITES SCORE. KNIGHTLIKE WINS FLYING. Unfortunately the club was not well favoured by the weather for the opening day of their meeting, which this year opens the Taranaki summer racing carnival instead of, as in previous years, being held early in February. Showery weather as the morning advanced unquestionably proved a big factor in deterring many from attending, and consequently there, was a decrease in the gate receipts with, of course, a corresponding decrease in the totalisator investments. Providing the weather is favourable to-day, with the half-holiday

in the surrounding towns, there is every reason to expect a very large attendance. From a racing point of view the change appeared to be beneficial, for in every race there was a splendid field, while the open events attracted horses of class, and as a result patrons enjoyed a splendid day’s sport. Mr. C. O’Connor at the barrier, though not up to his best form, effected some 'Rne despatches. Mr. H. Coyle as handicapper not only brought the fields together but had the public thinking, only three first favourites scoring. Despite some very close finishes Mr. W. P. Russel , in the judge’s box 'gave hijS decisions promptly. Custodian A. Moore ha-d given the preparation of the course his special attention, and though it was as the result of the rain holding a little, the judicious use of the motor roller during the day left it in good order. The totalisator staff under Mr. W. P. OUallaghan did not havs.:as. busy a time as usual, handling only £16,812, as compared with £22,357 10s for the first day of last year, a decrease of £5545 10s. . . ...

The principal race, the Egmqnt Cup, attracted a field of 12, and it ; was. well won by the favourite, the Day . Comet mare Bright Glow, which, always well placed, finished strongly to score a popular win by a length from Concentrate, with Merry Mint a head away. The Flying Handicap was contested by a field of seven. The two New; Plymouth mares, Lady Quex and Gold Dawn, yvere. the popular fancies, but they' had to give way to an outsider in the Paladin horse Knightlike, which came fast to score a narrow victory, with the topweight, Cimabue, second and. Gold Dawn third. Lady Quex had the worst of the start.

The Nolan Cup attracted 15. hacks and provided a great race, but over the last half mile the Waikato horse Pompeius went to the front to win comfortably, with the little fancied Chopin second and one of the favourite bracket. Make Up, third. After the race Mr. H. G. Dickie, M.P., called on Mrs. J. Gray, wife of the club’s president, to present the handsome cup to the owner of the winner, which she did amidst applause. Messrs. A. P. Wilson and B. N. Sandilands, stipendiary stewards, were present but found little to quibble at. There was only one inquiry, regarding some alleged interference during the running of the Nolan Cup. After hearing the evidence the stewards came to the conclusion that the occurrence was due to the tiring Marica dropping back, and no action was taken. The Hawera Municipal Band rendered a popular programme of music during the day. Secretary E. P. Cox had his department well organised while the president, Mr. J. Gray, and the officials and committee all added their quota to the enjoyment of the gathering.

SECOND DAY ACCEPTANCES. Hawera, Last Night. Acceptances for the second day of the Egmont meeting to-day are:— OKAIAWA HURDLES. One mile and a-half.

YESTERDAY’S FORM REVIEWED. (By “Moturoa.”) Democratic ran a great race in the Nolan Cup and, being partial to any going, he promises to be the elect of the public to-day, with Royal Acre and Diana’s Lad also faneie<L

The two-year-olds Cylinder and Orapai will command a Jot of attention in the Juvenile, but Clever ran fairly well yesterday. The actual favourite will probably be Clever or, in his absence, Cylinder and Valpre.

There will be plenty of scope for speculation in the hack six with Fernden, Clever, Just So, Peg Black and Marica engaged, but Fernden will most likely have more followers than Just So and Peg Black.

The distance in the ?,Tonks Stakes might not be far enough for Star Stranger, but Paitonu, who ran a good second at Wellington last month, goes this journey well and likes his home track. Silvermine will favour the going, hut Merry Mint, who assisted in the pacemaking for the Cup, should make more appeal. First Acre, Dolomite and Le Choucas will not be entirely neglected but it looks as if Paitonu, Merry Mint and Dolomite will be the favourites.

Tea Taster has been racing well this season and is smart over six furlongs. On form he looks like going very well in the Trial Handicap.

Meeting a very weak field in the Normanby Handicap Melissa, whose win at Feilding over this distance was full of merit, promises to start favourite over Monsogne and Rory Mor. # # * *

' Knightlike won the six furlongs event yesterday meritoriously, and even with a rise of 131 b he looks like seeing a shorter price than Gold Dawn in the Waimate Handicap.

The best betting race of the day should be the Inaha Handicap, in which public opinion will -be divided between 'Singer, Make Up, Calamine, Chopin and Marjoram. When the machine closes Chopin will perhaps have a slight call over Make Up and Singer.
