INTER-SCHOOL CRICKET

HONOURS WITH NELSON COLLEGE RAIN SAVES SCHOOL DEFEAT. (By Wire —Special to News.) Nelson, Last Night. With five wickets down for 29 runs overnight, Grieve and Evans went to the wickets for New Plymouth to-day in the match against Nelson College, the latter having made 277 in their innings. Bennett continued to bowl well, the batsmen finding difficulty in scoring and runs came slowly. The total had crept from 29 to' 43 when Evans was bowled. Grieve, who batted a long time for 14, eventually fell to Newman. Miles and Budd showed more promise but could not get going, the innings closing for 81. Bennett put up an exceptional performance with the ball. In 18 overs (10 maidens) he took five wickets for 24 runs. McKay’s average of three for 16 Hatters his bowling. With the big hurdle of 196 runs behind on the first innings Budd and Miles opened the follow on strike for New Plymouth. A better start was made this time but not goodenough to give the visitors a chance of winning. In fact, rain saved an innings defeat. Miles and Harding batted confidently, the latter showing good shots all round until McKay accepted a fast drive at mid-off when the batsman was 28. At the luncheon adjournment two wickets were flown for 48 runs. Rain affected the wicket, which began to cut up but was not sticky. The bowlers used sawdust. On the third ball after resuming Fay beat Miles. Grieve and McLean stayed for some time but could not score. At 2.40 p.m. heavy rain stopped play, the match being drawn. Both days had been miserable cricket weather’. The New Plymouth team returns by to-night’s boat. The scores arc: — ' NELSON COLLEGE.' First Innings 277 NEW PLYMOUTH. First Innings.
