TEST TRIAL CRICKET
TWO AUSTRALIAN TEAMS. ’•
JACKSON’S’ BRILLIANT DISPLAY.
By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Rec. 11.30 p.m. Sydney, Dec. 6, .< The Australian cricket test trial was begun on the Sydney cricket ground today between Ryder’s and Woodfull’s teams. The weather was perfect and the attendance was 7000.
Ryder won the toes and the opening partnership of Ponsford and Jackson, who put 1 on 278 runs, was the feature of the day's play. Both batsmen passed the century. Jackson was in delightful mood and made many graceful and masterly hits. His > 182 was compiled in 187 minutes, including 27 fours and one six. On the contrary, Ponsford displayed restraint throughout for his 131, which occupied 242 minutes and included 10 fours and one six. Both virtually threw away their wickets, being caught in the outfield while attempting big hits. Ryder was caught in a similar fashion. Marks and McCabe batted attractively. The match so far revealed no bowlers of outstanding ability. Six were tried, including Wall, Hornibrook, Fairfax, Blackie, Bradman and Burrows ( Tasman-, ian), all of whom were flogged unmercifully. Ellis and Burrows replaced Oldfield and A’Beckett in Woodfull’s team. The score at the drawing out stumps was 433 for four wickets.
Ponsford made 131, Jackson 182, Marks (not out) 64, Ryder 6, McCabe 35, Horrocks, West Australia (not out) 8. The fielding was of the highest order.
