SUN-BATHING ON BEACHES
FITZROY COMMITTEE’S DECISION. A difference of opinion 'regarding the propriety or otherwise of sun bathing on beaches with swimming, costumes lowered to the waist was expressed at a recent meeting of the Fitzroy Surf Club, when~it was stated that some misconception had arisen in the public mind in regard to the action of the Fitzroy Seaside Park Committee in prohibiting sun-bathing on the Fitzroy beach. The secretary of the club stated that he had conferred with the secretary of the Seaside Park committee on the matter and had been informed that the committee did not wish to stop sun-bathing, but to stop semi-nude sun-bathing. This meant that people could not lie on the beach with their “togs” down to the waist. It was pointed out that if men wished to indulge in this they could go a few hundred yards along the beach out of Fitzroy Seaside Park territory. Several complaints had been received about this semi-nude sun-bathing. Some present at the meeting. thought that the committee was doing quite rightly in prohibiting semi-nude sun-bathing; others saw no objection to it. Messrs. H. J. Thomas and W. Moorhead were appointed to confer with the Fitzroy Seaside Park on the matter and to point out that their statement had been misconstrued by some members of the public. Several of those present stated that they had been approached on the matter and the public seemed to have taken the statement at its face value.
