PICNIC AND REGATTA

NEW YEAR EVENT AT MOTUROA. f~~ JOINT EFFORT AGREED UPON. It was resolved at a'meeting of the Ngamotu Seaside Committee recently tc organise and conduct a beach;picnic, and regatta at. Moturoa on New Year’s Day, under the joint control of the Ngamotu Seaside Committee and the New "Plymouth Rowing Club. • '- -■ Those' present were Messrs. R. J. ■Deare (in the chair), J. S. S. Medley, J. Morey, R.' Glengarry, W. Hunter and P. J. Bartholomew,

A deputation, consisting of Messrs E. T. Petty, R. ,G. Howell, H. C. Collier and Burgess, from the New Plymouth Rowing Club, waited upon the committee to discuss the question of running the New Year picnic and regatta jointly,* and the terms upon which the bodies would combine.

Mr. Deare said he had been rather disappointed to see that the club had approached the Harbour Board, as it looked as though they were trying to get in ahead of the committee, but later a letter had been received by the committee from the chib. Mr. Hunter considered that the Rowing Club was encroaching on the privileges of the Seaside Committee, as it had had that day for years. . ; Mr. Petty said the Rowing Club was not trying to push in at all.' It just, asked'for the usual privileges. It would not do for both bodies to run the events independently on the same day. On the motion of Mr. Bartholomew, seconded by Mr. Morey, it was decided .to invite the Rowing Club to join with the committee to run the fixture. The deputation then -retired while the committee considered the question. Messrs Glengarry and Medley moved that the committee take 60 per cent, of the profits and the club 40 per cent. Mr. Bartholomew moved and the chairman seconded, that the proportion be two-thirds to one-third; Mr. Hunter moved that the club’s share be 25 per cent., but there was no seconder. The original motion was carried. Then ensued a discussion as to how losses should be shared, if any. Messrs Glengarry and Medley moved that the committee bear 60 per cent, of any loss, but an amendment moved by Messrs Hunter and Morey was that any loss be equally shared. Voting was even, and the chairman gave his casting vote in favour of the amendment. These conditions were accepted by the Rowing Club. ' - Messrs Deare, Glengarry, Roper and Hunter wore appointed, a; sub-committee to work with a sub-committee from the Rowing Club in making arrangements. Mr. J. Cameron was appointed care-, taker at the palladium.
