WAITARA HARBOUR BOARD

GROYNE TO PREVENT EROSION. The monthly meeting of the Waitara Harbour Board was held on Friday, Mr. James Hine presiding. Several transfers of leases were granted, while a renewal of lease in the estate of the late B. C. Lawrence was determined at a rental of £4 10s a year. Mr. C. R. Stead, representing occupiers of dwellings on the beach, wrote regarding beach erosion, he stating that various avenues for raising money had been explored, but not much progress had been made owing to the occupiers’ terms of lease being short. If the board erected a protection groyne, the cottage owners would contribute something, and he asked if the bould could intimate the minimum contribution to the cost that would be required. The chairman said it'was not a reply to the board’s request. What was required was the-amount the owners were prepared to contribute. Mr. Spurdie considered the board was not justified in spending money on this work, but if the cottage-owners gave some guarantee as to what they would contribute and the offer- was satisfactory to the board, he was prepared to consider the project. A motion was carried that Mr. Stead be asked to give a- definite reply to the board’s letter. Mr. Dugdale placed before the meeting plans of a stone groyne, which he estimated to cost under £6O. The groyne would be 150 feet long, 4 feet high and with an Bft base. Such a groyne had proved efficient in all parts of the world. Several members were of the opinion that the groyne would not be effective and would soon be washed away. It was decided to submit the plans to the board’s engineer for his opinion. The works committee was requested to inspect the banking of sand at the south wall and to inspect the pilot station. It was decided that the works committee should attend to erosion that was taking place between Messrs. T. Borthwick’s and Hatrick’s \vharf.
