ELTHAM COUNTY COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING HELD. ENGINEER REVIEWS ACTIVITIES. The monthly meeting of the Eltham County Council was held on Saturday. Present: Councillors A. L. Campbell (chairman), R. J. Kriuckey, P. R. Brown, A. V. Meseana, M. W. Barker, J. L. Campbell, W. E. Carter, C. E. McGuin- . ness and E. J. Gifford. A letter was received from the district representative of the Main Highways Board expressing a desire to correct an apparent misapprehension as to the board’s funds. It had been stated that the board would have an extra amount of £2000,000 to spend, this- representing a grant received since its estimates were framed. The fact was that no increase had been made in the amount available for road construction purposes and there would be no alteration in the amounts which had already been tentatively approved for the 'current year’s operations. The letter-was received. Mr., Otto Buckman, Moeroa, was .granted permi<ssion-to erect a fence on the top side of a road on section 4, block 16. • 7 ■: . The inspector reported that five cases of infectious disease, diphtheria, had been notified during the. month, four at Rawhitiroa and one at Mangatoki. . • The chairman reported that a- committee appointed at the previous meeting had visited Mr. Cocker’s property in -the Oinoria Riding and made an inspection with a view to settling a question between the council and Mr. Cocker as to the ownership of certain timber. The engineer was to make a tracing of the locality, and the committee' would , then report again. The tender of Mr. M. W. Bridger for the supply of dog collars was accepted. The engineer, Mr. F. Muggeridge, reported as follows:— South Riding.—Further bitumen patching and water-tabling was done on the Rotokare Road. Metal patching was attended to on the Mountain South Road. In readiness for bitumen work, metal chips were dumped on Mountain South and Boylan Roads.

Mangatqki Riding.—Water-tables and eulverte were cleaned out on the Hunter and JEltham Roads. Bitumen patching was attended to on the lower Hastings and Eltham Roads. On inspecting the upper Stuart Road bridge it was found that repairs were necessary. The bridge carpenter renewed most of the superstructure, and widened the carriage-way about two feet. Metal chips were dumped on the lower Stuart, upper Stuart and Eltham Roads. Permission was given Mr. Startup to place a pipe line under the Hunter Road. . Omona Riding.—General maintenance consisting of clearing slips, cutting fern and scrub, raking up loose metal and widening the formation was attended to on the Rawhitiroa Road. -The Waitiri Road is now open to vehicular traffic. A considerable amount of work was done in clearing slips, widening where necessary, and cutting fern and watertabling. Watertables and culverts were cleared on. the Mataiwhetu and Karewp Roads. Slips were cleared off the upper and lower Moeawatea Roads. The plans and specifications, of the Whiti creek bridge have been approved by the Public Works Department. The timber has been ordered, and when it comes to hand the work will be commenced.

Kaponga Riding.—Metal patching was dpne on the upper Palmer Road, The grader was used on the upper and lower Manaia, upper Rowan and lower Mangawhero Roads, and a portion of the Eltham Road. Metal chips were dumped on the Eltham Road and in the depot at Kaponga.

Eltham ' Riding.—Minor slips were cleared from the Mangimingi ridge. Further widening of the formation was done on the Rawhitiroa Road. Metal patching was attended to on the Hu Road. Slips were cleared off and watertables cleaned out o n the Rotokare Lake Road. Metal chips were dumped on the Rawhitiroa and Mangawhero Roads.

GENERAL ITEMS. A very enjoyable dance was held at the Pembroke Road hall on Wednesday night. The music which whs supplied by Marsh’s orchestra was excellent. The opportunity was taken to give out the points prizes for the season. These were won by Mrs. H. Nicholls and Mr. T. Waite respectively. Extras were supplied by Miss Aagaard and Mr. G. Aagaard was M.C. The Elthanj County Council on Saturday established a record by transacting the business of its monthly meeting within half an hour. The council met at 10.30 a.m. and the clock had not struck II when the chairman declared the meeting closed. The reputation of the Auckland Warehouse Drapery and Clothing Store (opposite County Hotel), Stratford, is now well established as a thoroughly dependable house in which to get quality goods at a low figure. They win and hold a steady trade by selling on these lines. Specialising in household and linen goods, dress goods, hosiery, vests, and bloomers, etc. Men s and boys’ clothing and mercery. Auckland Warehouse, Stratford.* Bargains, novelties, produce, cakes and afternoon tea will be the ingredients atthe Holy Trinity Church sale to be held in the Parish Hall, Stratford, tomorrow from 2 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. There will be a special evening entertainment. Admission will be free in the afternoon, while a silver coin will secure admittance at' night. A euchre party in which good prizes will be open to competition will be held in the Forresters’ hall, Stratford, tomorrow night.

KING’S THEATRE, STRATFORD. “A Woman against the World” will be screened to-night only. The tale as it unreels tells of the advent of a young girl who is ambitious to become a reporter on a big Metropolitan daily, but is. rebuffed by the men of the staff, receiving email assignments, and very little to do. While covering a fashionable wedding she suddenly stumbles upon a clue to a murder case and unknown to her city editor starts out to clear up the mystery. Despite her protestations to

the editor of the innocence of the man involved, the suspect is convicted and sentenced to the electric chair. Still maintaining that the condemned man is guiltless, she perseveres in her determination to free him and up to the very last minutes, when everything seems hopeless she stumbles upon a clue, and by clever unmasks the real murderer- and save the man from-'-death. Splendid work is done l»v Harrison Ford as the condemned society man and Georgia Hale as the persevering girl reporter. Others in this splendid cast include such well known screen players as Lee Moran, Gertrude Olmstead, * William Tooker, Walter Hiers, Ida Darling and Harvev Clark. ■. '

NICOLA AT STRATFORD. Amazed and mystified the audience at the Town Hall, Stratford, on Saturday night §at for over-two hours while Nicola, ..master of magic, unfolded skilfully his programme of tricks. Following a programme similar to that given at Hawera the previous evening, Nicola was tendered at’.--'tion t?; t was testimony enough to his power, of entertainment. Clean and .swift in his action and ever with a startling denouement, Nicola was often greeted with a gasp of surprise at 'the' conclusion of his tricks. The house was fair.
