METHODIST TENNIS OPENING.' ■ NEW SEASON ENTERED UPON. There was a good attendance of members and friends at the official opening for the season, of the Stratford Methodist Tennis Club yesterday.. Dull but fine weather and an absence o'f wind gave ideal tennis conditions. The opening ceremony was performed by the Rev. J. Boothroyd, who expressed the hope that the club would have a successful season. He referred to the illness of the Rev. H. L. Blamires, whose place he had taken. for three months, and hoped Mr. Blamires would soon recover. . ■ No competition was arranged, but members, kept the courts occupied till dusk compelled a cessation of play. Afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladies. CONCERT AT ELTHAM. To-night in the Eitham Town Hall patrons are» promised something quite unique, as far as concerts are concerned. Mr. Hubert Carter, whose tenor voice is a revelation to most people, has drawn up a programme which cannot fail to please everybody. The secret of his great success with his audiences lies not only in the fact that he has a wonderful range of voice, but that he selects his songs with the skill of a master. On this occasion the programme is well blended with duets and quartettes, and one glance at the names of the artists is sufficient to visualise the possibilities of such a combination. Unfortunately owing to illness, Mr. and Mrs. J. D. McQuin are unable to appear, but the committee has been fortunate in securing the services of Miss Officer, of Inglewood, another pupil of Mr. Carter’s, while the duties of accompanis.te. will be in tiie capable hands of Mrs. R. P. ‘Douglas.. GENERAL ITEMS. The Celtic Cricket Club (Stratford) has decided not to enter a team in the Thursday competition this year, but will combine -with the Stratford Club. This decision, was brought about by the difficulty that has been experienced in obtaining sufficient Thursday players. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., has received the following cable dated October 9 from London: —“New Zealand, choicest salted butter is quoted at 182 s to 184 s, New Zealand ■white cheese, at 94s to 955, and coloured at 945., The - market- is firm ■with a -weaker tendency.” An unusual accident resulting in painful injuries to Mr. A. H. Turner, Eitham, occurred yesterday morning while he was fitting a tyre to a motor wheel. When a considerable pressure of air was in the tyre the inner tube burst and was ripped for about two feet. The wheel was buckled and Mr. Turner received injuries to his face-and thigh. He was removed to the hospital and was, last evening, reported to be progressing satisfactorily.
