'ASKS GOD TO BLESS WAR’

PETITIONING FOR VICTORY NEW PRAYER BOOK ATTACKED CALAMITOUS, SAYS PASTOR By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Australian Press Association. London, Oct. 9. The Rev. Rhondda Williams, president of the Congregational Union, speaking at the Assembly at Norwich, said it was calamitous that the compilers of the new Anglican Prayer Book had put ■ in a prayer for victory, for use in war time. There was not a Christian clement in it, save the name of Jesus at the end. To pray for victory meant asking God to bless the use of poison gas, boiling oil, incendiary bombs, treachery, lying and bayonets. If God really blessed the use of such things the world would do better by cursing than worshipping him.

A country which could be defended only by war was not worth defending. It was high time the Christian churches washed their hands clean of this w ar business.
