POLITICAL BRIBE ALLEGED

SCANDAL IN QUEENSLAND LABOUR MINISTRY INVOLVED r 1 INVESTIGATIONS ' PROMISED By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Australian Press Association. Received Oct. 10, 9.50 p.m. Brisbane, Oct. 10. Considerable discussion has taken place in the Legislative Assembly concerning the actions of prominent people interested in the Mungana oil leases and the Mount Isa silver-lead field. Allegations are that pressure was brought to bear on the former Ministry to build a railway to Mount Isa and for the Government to purchase the Mungana oil leases at £40,000 in consideration of gifts of shares. The Minister of Railways, Mr. G. Morgan, declared in the House that the Labour member, Mr. Randolph Bedford, “out of the goodness of his heart” had given shares to certain friends, including Mr. E. J. Theodore, M.P., and deputy leader of the Federal Labour Party, Mr. W. McCormack, former Labour Prime Minister of Queensland, and Mr. A. J. Jones, an ex-Minister. It is further alleged the gift of shares was worth thousands sterling. The Prime Minister, Mr. A. E. Moore, has agreed to appoint a Royal Commission to investigate the scandals, but the inquiry will not commence until Mr. McCormack returns from England.
