HOLIDAY IN A MOTH
FLIGHT IN EUROPE. . . London, Aug. 23. ’ Most New Zealanders buy a motorcar as soon as they reach London, but Mr. Hamish Armstrong (Hawke’s Bay) bought a Moth instead a few weeks ago and took lessons at the London AirClub. The plane cost £7OO. He -iriiet a South African friend, Mr. Borden Stone, also an amateur pilot, who agreed to fly over Europe with him, taking turns in piloting the plane. “Last Saturday week we hopped to Paris and spent the week-end looking over its attractions," said Mr. Armstrong to a Daily News representative. “On Monday we flew -over the Black Mountains to Munich, dropping in at Nancy and Strasbourg- for meals. Wednesday wo planed to Friedrichsha-. fen to look over the Dornier : works, where they built the 100-passenger aeroplane, and next morning we saw the Graf Zeppelin start on her world tour. Five Lours later we started to jump to- Nurnberg (lunch), Leipsig (afternoon tea), and Berlin (dinner). V7e did Berlin on Friday, and early Saturday we started to make a bee-line for London. On the way we called at Hanover, Osnabruck, Amsterdam, and Calais for either meals or refills of petrol. “So far we hal absolutely no mechanical troubles, but a head wind kept US in the air. for nine and a-half hours, and it .-as getting dark and we had no navigating lights, we decided to call at Penshurst Aerodrome, near Tonbridge. in Kent. To-day we completed our 2500 mile flight to London. “We have had a grand time, and we are going to start a flying tour of England and Scotland. So far we have used the Moth purely for pleasure, but it ought to be very handy in New Zealand for looking up my friends or locating outbreaks of fire in the bush."
