VICTORY FOR 14-YEAR-OLD BOY. Jack Julian, the 14-year-old Patea cyclist, won the Carlyle (Patea) Club’s Wanganui-Patea road race on Saturday and gained fastest time, covering the distance in 2 hours 31 minutes. The win was both popular and spectacular, Julian laying a wheel behind Quayle with 100 yards to go, when he spurted and crossed the tape five lengths ahead of Quayle. Leaving Wanganui at 1.30 p.m., the limit men had a head wind, but set up a good pace and were doing well at Kai Iwi. At Waitotara, which was reached at 3.15 p.m., Forsyth and Julian were leading, the latter having caught the limit men and passed them. At Waverley (3.414 p.m.) Quayle, Julian, Gunn and Featonby were all together, with Maule (scratch) and the other backmarkers 44 minutes behind. Shortly afterwards Gunn retired after lagging well behind, he finding the pace too severe. Julian and Quayle then set a merry pace and, going well together, soon‘left the bunch behind. Several entrants had spills and five did not complete the course. The placed men were: Julian 1, Quayle 2, Maule 3, R. Clarkson 4, Featonby 5, Beer 6.
