PLAY IN NORTH TARANAKI. CLUB PRACTICE MATCHES. —- ' * Favoured by beautiful weather, the cricket season was unofficially opened in New Plymouth pn Saturday, when the Old Boys, New Plymouth and Western Park clubs all held practice matches on the Tukapo ground. The matches were very well attended, and considerina- it was so early in the-season some surprisingly good form was shown. In the Old Boys’ match the A veim made 100 (A. Petty 20, Eggleton' £O, Batten 13, Lash 12). Pruden took three wickets for two runs; Medley, two for 11- Pratt, one for 12; J. Palmer, one for 27; Hall, one for 9; K. Fookes, two for 23. The B team made 107 (K. Fookes 48, Hall 23). Batten took two wickets for 6 runs; Johns, two for II; Lash, two for 29; A. Petty, one for 15; Sorenson, two for 10; S. Fookes, one for 3. K- Fookes played a fine innings for his 48, timing the ball excellently. The two New Plymouth teams made 31 and 51 respectively. Larkin made 16 and Leech 31. Groombridge, C. G. Clarke, Leech, A. Clarke, Nicoll, Griffin, Gibbons, Simpson, Baldwin, Shaw, Nasmith and Avery all had a turn with the ball. Several young players, including a fair representation of ex-High School boys, were present at the Western Park practice. Included amongst the new members was Dr. Andrew, who once figured prominently in Dunedin cricket.
