UNEMPLOYMENT RELIEF

RESIDENTIAL QUALIFICATION PROBLEMS BEFORE COMMITTEE, SYSTEM OF DISTRIBUTING MEN. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Oct. 4..... Despite the fact that the major problem of creating avenues of employment for the early placing of the unemployed, has been dealt with the Cabinet committee which is administering the Government’s unemployment relief proposals is finding itself fully occupied at the meetings it is having daily. The Prime Minister’ announces that it has been decided that it will be necessary to enforce the stipulation that men engaged must have been resident for three months in the Dominion. "The object of this will be obvious,” said Sir Joseph, “If some such safeguard were not applied there would in all probability be au influx of workers from overseas with! the result that the position would become worse than if the Government made no attempt to deal with the situation. “As soon as the registrations are sufficiently complete,” added the Prime Minister, “‘it will be possible with the best advantage to themselves, that is, as near to their homes as possible. It will be recognised that this will not be practicable to the extent that the Government would like, but it will be followed wherever it is reasonable to do so.” Mr. McCreadie, secretary of the Unemployment Association, addressed a large number of workless men at Auckland this morning, urging patience till the Premier had an opportunity of fulfilling his promises.: He said, the work would be ’lassed as relief work, but would enable men to earn a living wage. He assumed that there would be separate quarters for married men and* that teachers would be provided where a certain number of children were located. He said the association would investigate eases where men held dual positions and endeavour to have the matter rectified. .
