Callander wrote urging that the trees be cut down in Hassard Street as they were keeping the sun out. The chairman: I would be very sorry to see 'them cut down. The trees near my place are just in the same position and shade my place even more, but I would not- have them cut down for all the tea in China. PATEA BOXING ASSOCIATION. A meeting of the Patea Boxing Association committee was held on Wednesday. Present: Messrs. F. Ramsbottom (chairman), Rook, Hodge, Hunt, Paterson, McKenna, Hemingway and Gardiner (secretary). The secretary reported that he and. the chairman had waited on Hawera boxing enthusiasts, who had decided to accept the Patea association’s offer of assistance for a tournament at Hawera. Subsequently, however, an association had been formed at Hawera and complications had arisen. A letter was read from the Hawera association stating that a boxing association had been formed and thanking the Patea association for its assistance. The chairman said the least the Hawera association could have done was to inform Patea of their intention, seeing that-the local association had made arrangements to -run a ’tournament in Hawera. ; • The secretary of the New Zealand Boxing Council wrote thanking the Patea association for the assistance rendered the Hawera association. Mr. McKenna said the best way to clear things up would be to hold a tournament in Patea, but the secretary pointed out that, boxers available for a local tournament had now signed up to fight in Hawera. Arrangements could have, bean made for a Donovan-Leckie fight in Patea but for the formation or revival of the Hawera association. It was decided to. fully explain the position to the Hawera association, and inform them that the president, secretary and two members of the committee would be prepared to wait on the Hawera .association and discuss the position with them. It was also decided that the new set of rules be submitted to a general meeting of members for adoption. CYCLING. A committee meeting of the Carlyle Cycling Club was held on Tuesday, when various details in connection with today’s Wanganui-Patea road race were discussed. Weather prospects are favourable and a following wind is forecasted. Last week-end a number of entrants went over the course with R. Crutchley as pacer. Jack Julian and Clarkson showed great speed on long climbs while Gunn, though slow on the hills, proved very speedy on the flat stretches. Signal with his handicap should have a fair chance. Maule, on scratch, will need to make a merry pace to close with the middle-distance handicap men, but if he succeeds in reaching them the rest should be within his compass. Public opinion favours Jack Julian, with Gunn as runner-up. Beer, however, is in the? pink and may be relied upon to give the favourites a good fight for the winning position. Handicaps have been declared as follow:—T. Maule, scr; W. Beer, R. Clarkson, 3min; J. Julian, W. Quayle, N. Percival, Gjmin; A. Clarkson, A. Featonby, 9min; W. Gordon, H. Gunn, W. Forsyth, 12niin; M.
