A BLOW IN THE FACE

MAORI WOMAN TO PAY. FRASER ROAD NATIVES QUARREL. For striking her neighbour, Airs. Manoewanui Graham, in the face, Airs. Rau Broughton, of Fraser Road, has to pay charges amounting to £3 17s. Airs. Broughton was charged in the Magistrate’s Court at Hawera yesterday with having assaulted Mrs. Graham, who asked that the defendant be ordered to find sureties of peace. Air. L. A. Taylor, for the informant, and Air. P. O’Dea, for the defendant, agreed to abandon the claim for sureties, Air. O’Dea stating that the assault was admitted. Mr. Taylor stated that defendant and her husband occupied a whare on a block of 40 acres at Fraser Road belonging to Iwi, who boarded with them. Iwi°gave the informant three acres out of the block and the defendant was jealous of her and caused trouble. The assault complained of took place in the street, defendant quite unexpectedly striking informant in the face. Mr. O'Dea expressed the defendant’s regret for her unwarranted action and sa?d that if a fine were imposed he hoped it would be a small one, as it would fall on her husband, a ' hard-working man. Mr. J. H. Salmon, S.M., said he would not impose a fine, but would order the defendant to pay costs. These included £2 2s solicitor’s fee, £1 Is interpreter's fee, and 14s court costs. MAINTENANCE ORDERS. DEFAULTERS BEFORE COURT. The Wednesday Cricket Chib at HaI wera had a most successful opening of the season yesterday. Not only was the weather entirely favourable, but the number of players at King Edward Paik exceeded expectations, two sides of 13 each taking part in a practice match. It proved a close contest, the A team making 109 runs and the B team 105, and a°number of players showed good form, most of the younger members doing well with the bat. The principal scorers in the A team were G. Alaloney 37, Gribble 15, McNaughton 12 and A. Stevens 11, and to the other side’s total Milroy contributed 21, Coleman 15, Shaw not out 13 and Horsboroiigh 13. Millar (five wickets) and Hughes (two wickets) were the most successful of the A bowlers, while Cate, a new member of the club, took four wickets for the B team and Stevens also bowled well. The Wednesday Chib is endeavouring to arrange a match with the Hawera Club for Labour Day. GRAND THEATRE, HAWERA. FINALLY TO-NIGHT, “THE RINGER.” Thousands of people have read and enjoyed the book version of ‘ The Ringer,” and many thousands more have seen and enjoyed Maurice Aloscovitch in the stage version, but for those who have already become acquainted with this play through these mediums, or for those who have not, the film version, which is showing at the Grand Theatre, will be just as entertaining, or even more so, on account of the wonderful acting by Leslie Faber as Dr. Lomond. Mr. Faber has been known in England for some years as one of the finest actors on the English stage. Ho has also appeared in many Broadway successes. ' The director, Arthur Maude, seems to have made a happy choice in securing this clever actor for the leading role, for it is one which very few stage actors could portray successfully on the films. Annette Benson is another asset to British films, as Cora Ann Milton. She is expressive and natural, and conveys the impression that she has played this part many times, which, of course, is not so. Other outstanding characters in the cast are those of Inspector Wembury and Alary Lcnley, portrayed respectively by Nigel Barrie and Muriel Angelas. The former has played many outstanding roles in American films, and he is a welcome addition to British productions. Muriel Angelas is a winsome and talented young actress, who is coming to the fore in motion pictures. “The Ringer” will be finally screened this evening.
